I don't think there is such a thing as a selfless act. I really don't. I think that everything you do has some benefit to you, otherwise there really is not point in doing it. You like the feeling of helping others. You want to make sure that the world will be safe for your future generations. etc.
I don't disagree that organizations are grateful, but still I think that if they didn't have volunteers, that it could still somehow get done.
About not being forced to do it. I was required to get 150 hours so as to get full IB diploma so as to get 24 credit hours. That's why I did it. And I do the one's for NHS and Beta because I want to have the stolls and cords at graduation and there are only 60 hours between the two of those; so, that's not as bad. Oh and of course there was the wanting to look impressive.
I didn't say that I didn't care about the world around me. I do. I just don't think that some of the things that I "volunteer" for really amount to helping the world around me. Also, you don't have to volunteer to affect the world around you.

Looks like you got something out of it - so why complain?
You do not need 150 community service hours for IB. You can have 150 community service hours, but playing in a band can give you hours just as well as working in a homeless shelter can.
And this organization (ProgressiveU) cannot be run with its current size without volunteers. You would not have any of those features on the sidebar if Art didn't have us running the show, and you would pretty much be completely unmoderated. Hospitals rely on volunteers for a number of things, because they simply do not have the funds to have those be paid positions. Free clinics similarly just don't have the funds to pay for some of those positions, because they charge little to nothing for the care they give.

I'll concede that some organizations must have volunteers... I'm merely trying to comment on the false motivations behind the volunteering
yeah you do ... and I'm not in band or any of that so I can't count that... and in my opinion that should not really count anyway because what you're doing is supposed to benefit others in some way ... unless it's a performance or practice for a performance band shouldn't count ...
Progressive U is an organization that has true volunteers... volunteers that are truly on here voluntarily ... there is no one telling them they have to get volunteer hours this way ... that is how volunteering should be... you help where you want to

The point of CAS is to get you active in your community (school, local, regional, international). And yes, being in band got me involved with my community. And all bands perform, so I'm not sure where your caveat would fit in. I also didn't say you didn't need 150 hours, I said you don't need 150 of VOLUNTEERING. You can get many of those hours in other ways. Notice how only one part of CAS is actually service.
