Why take that job???

So I'm sitting here at work, and I am a receptionist. I believe I am great at this job, because just as quickly as I can get an attitude I can turn it off. Any job you are working in America that involves working with customers, whether it is in person or on the phone, you have to maintain a certain amount of friendliness. If you don't you could lose your job.

Well this is in regards to a FedEx agent. Once you here the situation, please try to tell me why take a job that you can't handle?

I call FedEx, and cancel our regularly scheduled pickup, shortly after my boss brings a package up, so of course I call them back again. I get a gentleman who I suppose is having a not so good day, or maybe his Valentine's didn't go well. Well he first tells me that he can't tell me if they can come, and that I will be charged. Well considering we pay a monthly fee for delivery that made no sense. And considering this isn't the first time my boss has came up after the cancellation, I've never been told about this extra fee. So I tell him I want to find out why everyone else hasn't been doing their job and telling me this all the other times, so to let me talk to his manager. All of a sudden he can tell me that the driver will be here, and I will NOT be charged (I guess the word manager will make anyone do their job). Well so I proceed to ask him "Okay so the driver will be here." I'm sure at this point he senses my frustration, and comments back "Well only if you buy him dinner seeing as you disrupted his weekend", I then said "excuse me" and he says " well some people do make plans for the weekend." Absolutely appalled I then ask for his manager, I then go back and forth with him with him telling me he will not get his manager and what did he do wrong, for like 10 minutes. Unbelievable to me he finally gets his boss on the phone.

Now can someone please tell me, if you have a personality like that, or if you can't cover you bad days, then why take that job??? Why rub off on someone else because you can't handle your job? Are there any jobs that anyone thinks that this type of behavior would be acceptable when working directly with customers?? I can't think of any!

Sometimes rude people don't exactly have another job lined up in which they can sit by themselves in a back office.

I'm just assuming that you could have just set them off.

I'm not saying that you did anything wrong, in fact, I think the situation was handled very well by you.

Maybe it was just one of those days.

I reading your entry and surprisingly, I'm not at all surprised. And that is a shame. It's like customer service is a thing of the past. It's sad when I'm actually treated well at a establishment, I'm more surprised. I with you on the point that if you cannot handle yourself professionally you should not work with the public.

There were plenty of days when my husband pissed me off, I was sick, my car broke down whatever it was but I put on a phoney smile and got my hollywood on acted like everything in my world was fine.

As consumers maybe we need to demand more.

I know exactly what you mean! I have been a secretary for at a law office for almost two years now and I also deal with a lot of rude people on the other line of the phone. Why would they even want a job dealing with phone calls, etc. if they obviously aren't going to take it seriously! There is one office that my office does a lot of work with and I abosolutely love making phone calls to them. Everyone in that office always seems to be in a good mood and they are always nothing but nice and polite to me. It is amazing what a difference someone that cheerful on the other line of the phone can make.
