Personally I believe the gas price situation is way out of control. I think it is everyone's responsibility to do their part to lower gas prices. Our government officials should be doing tax breaks for us (not more for big oil), and the refund idea is good. Also, we as consumers need to cut down on our gas usage... don't idle your cars... no jackrabbiting, and don't drive so fast. Most cars run most efficiently around the 60mph range so dont go 100. Also, I think most of the gas price problem is price gouging. I feel this way because the top 5 oil companies posted like a 37 billion dollar profit... hmm am I the only one who sees a connection?? Record high gas prices and record high profits?!?!?!? Post and let me know what you think.

Wow. Well, most Americans will complain because they WANT to drive around without a purpose, it's a fabric of our social life.
And I told my cousin that going 60MPH will be the bst speed and he was shocked, first, that I knew that, and second, that I would mention such a terrible idea to HIM. A young guy.
I agree, personally i believe it's wrong to be charged so high when there is no reason for it. Secondly I am also a young guy and we like to drive fast to impress the girls, but sometimes you just have to slow down. I used to drive an rx-8 ( mazda rotary engine considered a 6-cylinder car), anyways the gas got too high because you don't dare put low grade in it's at least mid-grade or higher. Now i drive that rarely just for show or short drives... and to my prom which is about a month and a half away. At any rate gas for me is 3.25 for mid grade so i switched to a honda accord ( 4-banger) and put low grade so the gas isn't so bad. Point is don't drive like a moron, and hopefully the politicians will tell big oil to stop gouging us.
Do you realize how much in taxes Exon for example paid ???? 27 million I believe it was. I will check the figures.
Do you realize that Exon has to make and retool their equipment for 30 types of gas because of EPA regulations??
Do you realize that the GOVERNMENT gets their money every year?
I don't hear a complaint about how much the government is making off all of us?
Do you also realize that the that exon makes a few cents per gallon of gas? The rest is taxes.
Do you also realize that as far as the west coast goes we are getting supplied with the same amount of gas that we have gotten since the 70's. There is alot more drivers on the road today than there was in the 70's.
If government would stop taxing them to death we would see our gas prices come down.
Just saying :)
Night owl has a point. Taxes on oil companies are a problem, but definitely not the main one that's causing oil prices to be high.
The thing is that, there is price gouging. Oil companies may be doing some of it, of this I'm not sure. The real problem is limited supply. The same amount of supply is still produces, but with more nations industrializing: Brazil, China, India, etc., more gas is needed. Demand is causing the prices to go up, because the oil exporting countries can get away with charging more. We just need to cut back.
