So I walked to my mailbox and for the third time... yes you read that correctly, for the THIRD time in three years I had been summons to jury duty. My first reaction was "WTF!?" Who is running this system?? My parents, who are in their mid forties have each been called to jury duty twice, and I have now been called three times, why do they want me so bad??
Now, before I go any further I want to make this clear... I have nothing against doing my civic duty, in fact I think the idea of sitting on a jury is actually pretty neat. Can you imagine how much you would learn about the judicial system? And really, how satisfying would it be to have a direct role in the goverment... I think the potenetial is fascinating!
Here is the problem though, I am a full time college student who is also juggling two jobs. Attempting to pay my way through college, while accumulting student loan after student loan, I just do not have the time to give to the courts. How come there can not be some system where I can postpone the jury service until... let's say retirment?? I promise I will gladly do them all then!
Sadly, we don't have such a system and I guess a jury of all retired people would not be a fair sample of the population for the average criminal.
So, for the time being, I guess I will slip on the skirt, button up my top and drive my self down to the courts. With homework in hand I will sit and wait for my number (sad to think that to the courts I am not a woman, not a sister, not a student, just a series of twelve numbers) to be called... oh and I will also be doing during the week of my spring break...
