…So Apparently We Are All Going to Hell?

Tagged:  •    •

I am appalled at today’s society and how you proudly declare that you’re all going to hell. Now I’m a Christian through and through, not going to hide it, not going to deny it. I’m not even going to tell you what to believe either, but seriously do you even have the slightest understanding of what you saying?
Now I’m not saying that everybody is going to hell, because not everybody is but I feel like most people today are misinformed about what hell is, why they are going there and what the real alternative to hell is. According to a beliefnet.com study in May of 2006 49% of the people polled believed that they were going to hell, either because they don’t have the right beliefs (26%) or because of immoral actions (23%).
Now I think the reason that most people sin is that they want to do something that they know is wrong, but they do it anyway regardless of what they have or have not been taught morally, whether it is a little lye or going behind your parents back. But unless you repent unto God for your sins you ARE going. to hell… and no it is not going to be a party. I believe that hell is going to be as bad as dying a second death in a lake of fire, a lake of fire that will NEVER stop burning where you will burn for eternity (reference to Revelations 20:14). Why would you want to put yourself through that?
What bothers me the most about the whole things is not only do people think about the fact that they are going to go to hell, but how they fell the need to proudly display it everywhere. Verbalizing it, acting out and even sharing their desire on Facebook. On Facebook there is a group that people can join entitled …So Apparently I’m Going to Hell. According to the group you can go to hell for the following: doing any drugs or alcohol, guitar playing, having a tattoo, being a girl who wear revealing clothing, being blonde or fat, cursing, kissing on the mouth holding hands or doing anything sexual before marriage, being homosexual, judging people, being selfish, playing sports, watching BET, MTV, VH1 or TNT, associating with Hollywood, listening to “gangster rap”, techno, Christian bands, or rock and roll, believing in evolution, being anything other then Christian, being a woman or a women who works, being in a sorority or fraternity, owning a pet, or sin, have sinned, or plan on sinning in the future.
Now there is one major problem with this group. There are over 100,000 member of this group, most of which are wrongly informed on the reason that they are going to hell. !!! NEWS FLASH!!!! If we went to hell because we sin, have sinned, or plan on sinning in the future, then everyone would go to hell. Just because people are Christian, it doesn’t mean that people stop making mistakes and start living their lives with out fault. If you looked at my life and didn’t know I was a Christian, than I bet you would think that I was going to hell. But what sets me apart from you and the reason that I’m not going to hell is because I have been forgiven for the wrong things that I have done, and no I’m not talking about my parents, I’m talking about being forgiven by Jesus… He forgives me no matter how bad I’ve been, or how horrible the things that I have done are. If you want to live an eternal life in a lake of fire, that is fine by me, but there is another, better option for you.
Unfortunately there are going to be people who read or hear this that aren’t going to believe what has been set down for them in this paper… which is unfortunate but I’m not telling you what to believe I even told you that at the beginning of this paper. I just want you to walk away with a better understanding of what you are getting your self into when you say that you are going to hell.

You had good intentions on writing this. I agree that many people are misinformed about the things they do therefore believing they are going to hell.

"Now I think the reason that most people sin is that they want to do something that they know is wrong,"

People sin because they are human. I don't believe that they sin because they know it is wrong. I am sure some people do this, but not most people.

"But unless you repent unto God for your sins you ARE going. to hell… and no it is not going to be a party. I believe that hell is going to be as bad as dying a second death in a lake of fire, a lake of fire that will NEVER stop burning where you will burn for eternity (reference to Revelations 20:14). Why would you want to put yourself through that?"

Have you spoke to god about this? Did he tell you you are going to hell if you don't repent? Sure I repent and I believe in god but to say someone is going to hell because they don't repent? If you had evidence of this than I would believe you. But you are using the bible as a reference. How do you know the bible is correct? This is my main issue. Religions follow their bible... rather than worshipping their god.

I am sure hell is not a party. But with all honesty no one really knows where they will go when they die. What if someone never understood God or was taught that there is no god. Should they burn in hell because they didn't repent because they were never informed? No. With so many different beliefs thrown out there who knows what is the truth?

So I read you blog and I understand that you think that those who aren't Christian are going to hell. What about those people that don't belong to Christian faith and still live a life that is relatively free of sin? What if you are Buddhist and live a life of giving to others. Does that constitute going to hell? I am not trying to attack you, rather just better understand you views. What if you have lived your whole life not believing in god, then you get sick or something. Then you decide on a whim that you do in fact believe in God. What would happen then? Would you be redeemed, even when you spent your whole life not believing. I am interested in learning more about your opinions/views. Thanks for you time.

That group you are referring to is a mockery of a preacher named Micah Armstrong. He is the one who is telling everyone they are going to Hell for simple things like wearing short skirts. The idea behind the group is that if Micah is right, everyone is going to Hell for one reason or another. Its original intention, i believe, is to not be judgemental. go back and look over the description a bit more carefully.

You are right. Going to Hell is not something to be proud of, and if the person believes in Hell, then they do not have to go. As for the whole question of, is a good person going to Hell, just because they are not Christain? To be honest, I don't know. I have trouble accepting a good person who is faithful to their religion and is a good person, sorry for what wrongs they did do, is going to Hell or Purgatory, but I got that idea from Chronicles of Narnia. If a person does not accept any religio, or faith, I should say, I think they will just stay in their coffin, rotting, just like they expect. I really don't know.

You beat me to explaining what the group actually is.

Micah Armstrong makes me laugh. Or gag. Laughing is a little bit more fun though. ;-)

Brother Jed is another one that I used to see on campus at least once a year.

I understand where you're coming from in a Christian perspective. However.

The reason why I frequently say things like, "Yep, totally going to hell, already got front row tickets to see Jim Morrison and Janice Joplin," is because according to the Bible and Christian beliefs, I am, but I don't believe in hell and I find the very concept of it to be ridiculous. Everyone who doesn't believe in the same god that you believe in is going to hell? How bogus is that? Christianity is not the world's majority religion. If you guys get your way, the majority of the people on earth are going to hell!

I say what I do to mock the Christian conception of hell, which I find to be completely ludicrous. And, on the off chance that I'm wrong and you're right, I'm holding out for God having a sense of humor and letting me in anyway.

I'm not Christian. Other faiths aren't even mentioned in your blog. You have some pretty good points here but this issue encompasses more than just Christians. Other people, whether they are Christian, Roman Catholic, or Jewish are constantly being told that their religion is wrong or that they are sinning and/or sinners. What about Atheists and Agnostics? They're constantly being persecuted by the people around them...sometimes even the people they love such as family members and friends. Most Atheists don't even believe in hell but it still is hurtful to be told one is going there for committing a "sin." Half of the time, people are called sinners for acts which are simply too liberal minded or different than the mainstream. I think I'll blog on this subject myself sometime. Thanks for the idea.

I love being challenged by what you have to say.

Let me just say that this writing was never meant for a blog that I wrote it for a Creative Writing class that I am taking. Tho I may not agree with what you say I want to be challenged in my faith and maybe someday soon (when I get some free time..yeah right) I will go back and read you comments more specifically and do a second revision on my paper.

But for right now Im glad that you are responding and I want to hear your continued comments.

Thanks :)
