I’m your typical female high school senior. My friends mean the world to me. I enjoy some subjects, but abhor others. I have a significant other (in this case, a boyfriend) who I enjoy spending time with. I only have a few more months until I escape from the people I’ve known for about 6 or 7 years. I can’t wait for the day that I’m able to break free from the theatrics that I’ve been subjected to since I enrolled in school – the same drama, only with different faces.
I’m not going to lie, I’m apathetic about most things that don’t directly affect me. That being said, it’s obvious that Social Security isn’t something I think about on a day-to-day basis.
Because I don’t really care about it, I don’t quite understand it. Basically, all that I’ve been told that it is, is something that basically amounts to a pension. It then goes to “those who need it most”. Like Disability? Because I know quite a few people who are getting money they don’t deserve.
I think the government needs to be more careful with its money. It needs to randomly check up on those who are receiving assistance, and take it from those who are cheating the system. Also, instead of relying on the government, I think we need to look more into personal retirement funds. I don’t understand why that can’t be implemented now.
Please, please, please educate me on this. I can’t find anything that clears up my confusion on the internet, and I’d greatly appreciate someone who would be willing to teach me.

Once you hit around the age of 65 you recieve social security. This does affect you. If you get into a profession where they don't give you good retirement benefits all you have is the social security. You get a check I believe either once a month or once a week, and it is not alot. After retirement this is what an older person has to live on. If they don't have a good 401 k then they are screwed. Many people who are only 14-20 something may not even be able to have social security anymore because they are saying it may run out. Some people aren't even offered a retirement fund through their job. They can save themselves, but with the economy the way it is it is hard. People who have retired very much deserve government help. They have worked their entire life. That government "help" may help a little bit but not as much as it should.
You should care about things that don't affect you also because one day they might end up affecting you. As you get older your views may change. It could be a typical teenage thing. I am not trying to stereotype you but even as a teen I didn't care about things..my views have changed now.
