Music

Do you know what is really cool?  Music.

There are so many different types of music, but they can all be understood and created by people all over the world.  Everyone can make music.  A 2 year old can make music; it might consist solely of banging a wooden spoon on a pot, but it can be considered music nonetheless.  There are so many genres of music, globally, that it just blows my mind.  Anyone can learn to read music and with some guidance they can learn how to play an instrument.

Some songs just really touch me.  I have all sorts of different playlists on my iPod that I shuffle around with my mood.  I have a playlist of songs from the first time I was ever in love.  All the songs in that list bring me back to that time of my life and bring back so many happy memories.  Then there are some songs that just empower me and make me want to do something crazy like get into the car and just drive until I can't drive anymore.  Then there are the getting ready songs I listen to while I'm getting dressed to go out to dinner or to do something with my friends.  I have my creativity music which is mostly folk or ethnic based.  I have my thinking music that is classical.  I have my party music that is mostly rap.

Though I am not able to read music or play an instrument, other than the triangle, I just LOVE music.  I don't know how my life would be if there was no music.  How would I have gotten through the separation from my father if I didn't have CDs full of his favorite songs?  How would I have dealt with losing a close friend without her beloved Coldplay?  How would I focus on putting the finishing touches on my midterm paper at 2 a.m. without my Mozart?

How has music changed your lives?

music has changed my life in a big way. almost a year ago i attended the sasquatch music festival in washington state. i got to see one of my favorite bands, Michael Franti & Spearhead perform. (if you've never heard of them i HIGHLY reccommend it). all their lyrics resonate themes of peace, love, tolerance, and everything else that's so seemingly underestimated in our world. while i was dancing in the crowd, i had a life changing revelation. i realized i want to make a difference in this world, spread the ideals michael franti advocates...make it a better place here on earth. i find salvation in music, it sets me free, it expresses emotions words cannot. music is truly an amazing blessing.
