A child rapist in Maryland had all charges against him dropped because the court could not find an interpreter to speak his native language of Vai, which is a West African language spoken by about 100,000 people world wide. The link to one of the news stories is below.

Why is this happening? This man not only raped his 7 year old relative repeatedly, he also, according to some reports, raped a 1 year old relative as well. I heard on the news today that this man had no trouble speaking or comprehending the English language. He is a high school graduate, and for those of us who have graduated high school, you know that in most cases, you CANNOT graduate without having taken, and passed, FOUR years of English. This man also, according to some reports, knew and understood enough English to NOT have had to take any ESL classes while in high school. He also attended community college. Based on these facts alone, I fail to believe that this man was incapable of understanding the charges against him, and I believe that there was NO reason for him to need an interpreter.
How can we let this guy off? I just don't understand. At the very least, the person who is in charge of finding interpreters should be fired. I cannot believe that in three years' time, this woman could not find and retain a single interpreter. Why wasn't this guy getting training in the English language while these three years were being pissed away? I would think that someone who ALREADY had a firm grasp of the English language, based upon his high school and college education, would certainly be able to understand what his charges were after THREE years of additional ESL. Remember, though, his grasp of the language was good enough years ago that he DID NOT need ESL...does this make any sense to anyone else why this guy is not in prison?
And so, what are we saying to others who don't have a firm grasp on the English language (or do, as the case may be, but are smart enough to fool psychologists and judges)? That it's okay to come into the United States and rape and molest our children? I think that's part of the message that we are relaying by allowing this guy to go free. Come to our country, commit crimes, and don't worry about speaking any English. In fact, don't bother learning English at all, then you can do whatever the hell you want to whomever you want, and you will be let off when some idiot court clerk can't find an interpreter for you. This is why we need a national language, and should make it mandatory as part of a revised immigration policy that you learn it, and have a firm understanding of it, before you are granted citizenship. Or a green card or a visa.
And what are we saying to this seven year old? What are we saying to this one year old? We are saying that they don't matter. We are saying that the trauma and pain that was forced upon them don't matter. This guy who raped these two children are more important than they are. Because of a technicality (and because we have to be so accommodating to people), these little kids are going grow up thinking and knowing that the US has let them down. I am so tired of us always having to be so politically correct and always having to accommodate these people who want to come into our country and not assimilate, but retain their own culture and language. These people want all of the benefits and perks that come along with being a citizen (or illegal immigrant) of the United States, but they don't want to adopt our culture. It's fine if you want to retain your culural identity, but do not completely shun the culture of the United States, and refuse to learn the unofficial language of our nation.
So, I got off of the subject there for a minute, but for me, it all kind of ties in together. This CHILD RAPIST has taken advantage of these little kids, and he's taken advantage of our judicial system, and he has taken advantage of the fact that the US has to accomodate all of the immigrants, both legal and illegal, often at the sacrifice of our own culture and dominant practices and beliefs. I don't know what the answer is, and it's very easy for me to say 'it ought to be this way' or 'it ought to be that way.' I do know, however, that we should not stand for this. This CHILD RAPIST needs to be locked up, and those who messed around by saying that this EDUCATED (four years of English classes, guys, four years) man has no understanding of the English language need to lose their jobs.

I saw this story on the news, and the reporter was able to find a speaker of Vai and English who lived fifteen minutes away and was more than willing to translate. In addition, upon talking to the man's neighbors, it was found that he was fairly fluent in English (the guy gave him a 7 or 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 in English proficiency).
