It is a sad time for household pets in Zimbabwe. Many pets are increasingly being surrendered to shelters at alarming rates due to food shortages for humans and pets alike. The number of surrendered pets are so high, that the shelters due not have the food to feed the animals adequatetly, nor do they have the resources to put down animals in a humane manner, Many shelters are turning too South Africa for aid in this crisis. Also as the number of unwanted pets grow and number of food items shrink a pracitce of slaughtering pets and selling the meat on the black market has come into play. The meat is reportedly unlabeled as to what animal it came from and comes in portions approximatley 20 pounds. It is not illegal to consume dog meat in Zimbabwe.
I think this is really sad. I'm not so much concerned on the fact of inhumanity as the animals are being destroyed under standards of animal rights organizations. But I am saddened by what led to this horrible outcome. We can't look at these people as savages as they are only doing this to survive... How can we shun a group of people doing what they have to do in order to survive?

I love my dogs as if they were a part of the family. But in dire times such as in the book 'Alive' I would eat them to stay alive. I understand the thinking of these people but how are we supposed to help if we can't even take care of the hungry in our onw country?
I know there are millions of people in the U.S. going hungry everyday. I'd like to help everyone, but how can we help others if we can't help our own house?
