Though segregation was far gone? Think again. In the hick-town of Ashburn GA, this year will be the first that students get to enjoy an un-segregated dance. Progressiveness is in the air (ok, so they're a little behind). Good thing this nowhere-town finally got the memo!
"They went to kindergarten together, sharing crayons and sleeping carpets, chocolate milk and peanut butter sandwiches. They navigated the treacherous waters of adolescence, laughing their way through disastrous first dates and drivers ed. They gossiped about teachers, cried over broken hearts, and struggled with algebra.
A half century after the Supreme Court ended racial segregation, parents and students in Ashburn, Ga., were still clinging to old ways, holding whites-only and blacks-only dances. That's pretty bad that that school was so slow to accept a non-segregated view. It's strange because in most parts of Georgia, I think blacks outnumber whites--or at least it's a more fair ratio than many other places.
Amazing that the people haven't socially 'evolved' until this year.
