I can never stand the inanity of people "discussing" sprts, blathering about games and players, as if it is something actually important. I never know what to say to people like this, because I cannot imagine getting through to them.
My professor calls sports "Weapons of Mass Distraction."
My girlfriend always repsonds to sports conversations by bluntly describing to people how there is genocide going on in the would, how we are at war right now, and how un-important football is by contrast. The gently mentioning what that says about the person.
Just another reason why I love her.

Why do you waste your time loving her? How much time do you waste being with her? Have you ever watched a movie with her? Ever watched a television show? Ever taken a walk in the park? Ever done anything at all that didn't contribute directly to the well-being of the world? Have you ever sat on the toilet longer than you needed to? Do you tie you shoes before you leave in the morning, or do you do the more efficient thing, which is, of course, tying them in the car while the light is red. Do you waste time taking a shower every day, or do you find that you are too busy saving the world. If you calculate all of the man-hours you have spent wasting time i think you will find you could have produced enough money to save thousands, perhaps even hundreds of thousands of dying children. Murderer.
Is time really there to be wasted. If so than we do a good job. If not. Then your telling a lie. because a time well wasted is time well spent. what is time. who really knows. time is known but yet is unknown. time is life, time is death, time is wasted, time is loved. Time is simply everything.
While I'm not exactly sure what you mean with some of your statements, I will say that I was being sarcastic with my previous comment. Nonprofit Poetry was trying to make the point that people who engage in trivial matters (like watching or discussing sports) are bad people, or atleast not good citizens, working to better the world around them. I took it a bit personally because I myself play sports recreationally, and follow professional and collegiate sports in my leisure time. Needless to say, I don't think that makes me less of a contributor to our world. I asked him (rhetorically) what he did with his time to make the point that people aren't machines. While I agree that people should try to be as well-informed as possible on subjects of real importance, and to try to act on their ideals as much as possible, we all need a certain amount of leisure time to just enjoy life. I read books, play sports, follow sports, play the piano.... _and_ keep informed and active about important things in our world. If you're willing to condemn me for watching the super-bowl, then where do you draw the line? You could live a life devoid of any pleasure seeking (even in moderation) and still be wasting time... a point which I think I made above.
I didn't mean to condemn everyone watching or playing sports. Of course I agree with recreation and all that, and myself am a fan of watching boxing.
Although I neglected to mention it, my comments were more aimed towards the people who are obsessed by sports, and take it to near-religious heights. Full-grown adults with a sports team tattoed on their arm. Who say they "love" a team.
More broadly I meant it as an indictment of the insane Superbowl Culture that allows millions upon millions to be spent on advertising some shitty products for people to consume.
While Alex's post is extremely loaded, I agree with his point. Your girlfriend and yourself could have easily used your time to help people instead of dishing out criticism. It is very interesting that you felt that the game was pointless, as Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King were honored last night in a pregame ceremony. You do bring up some very interesting points, that we all could do more to help the global community, but try to avoid blanket statements such as the ones you used. You may seem to be a little misinformed and critical.
GO STEELERS!
Give without expecting anything in return.
I love watching football. I think that we all need recreation, and watching football is many people's recreation. Saying watching football is making the world worse is stupid.
Then I guess it is a good thing I didn't say that.
Football is the rawest sport in existance. No where else in the world of sports can you find such an eclectic collection of athletes. from the Deion Sanders of the league with their instinct speed and agility to the Warren Sapps of the league chalk full of raw power, Football is the best!A statement to which millions of sports fans can attest.
I agree with LP. I don't see the problem with participating/watching sports. It helps lots of people unwind from a hard day's work or just escape from life for a while. I personally love football along with participating in many sports.
Though I hate watching the Superbowl, I think it's necessary for people to indulge in these selfish activies. I wonder what life will be like if talks of genocide, AIDs epidemic, terrorism, etc were the only things we talked about. I think our quality of life and desire to live that life would decrease. ... hmm. Superbowls = endorphins. i have no idea what i'm talking about.
I agree with the author. I can't stand being cornered by sports fans who go on and on and on about DA GAME. And I hate that they expect me to know what they're talking about -just because I'm a man. Here's a news flash, sports fans: not all of us are so unsure of ourselves that we have to live through others. Not all of us think sports are interesting. Not all of us would attend a sporting event and pay for the opportunity to applaud other men playing. And just because "your" team wins, it doesn't mean YOU accomplished anything. Please remember this and keep your loud, obnoxious opinions to yourselves. Thank you.
And, have you noticed that any "conversations" about sports don't follow the normal rules of intercourse - support -argument - proof. Sports conversations require absolutely no logic and the outcome is determined by who speaks the loudest and longest. It's the equivalent of an eye-to-eye ape stare-off. www.sportssuck.org
