Cheerleading

Recently in South Dakota cheerleading was made into an official sport on January 1, 2007.  At my school I still here only negative comments toward the cheerleaders and how it isn't a sport even though they have never been to a practice in their life.  One thing that I would like to point out, why would it not be a sport if they have a practice everyday.   The practices are strenous just as ones in volleyball or basketball.  Running is involved and also lifting.  (At least at my school)

I am frustrated with hearing all the degrading comments about being a cheerleader and I don't think that it is right or mature for students or faculty to state their opinions in the hopes of just antagonizing the person and to start a fight.  What is wrong with trying to open up to a new idea that it is a sport.  Cheerleaders have compeitions too so it's not that they are just showing school spirit at games.

Another thing that is said or told to us, "I can do it."  If you can do it why aren't you proving that to the cheerleadings and doing a toe touch and screaming your lungs out.  I had one teacher who was very sarcastic about the matter and when we said to do a toe touch he bent down and touched his toes.  He said anyone can do that.  The argument continued and escalated.  It was a frustrating matter and I refuse to bring that subject up in that class because it doesn't make me feel good about myself and I was offended how the teacher demonstrated his opinions and that he spoke out to make us feel like "stupid ditzy" cheerleaders.

I know that everyone has their own opinion but what about opening up to the idea that it is a sport to people and that they do deal with practices, sore muscles, and all the things that come with sports.

Competitive cheerleading is a sport, yes.
But all that shit ya'll do at schools is bullshit.

I got offered a full ride to Kentucky for cheerleading when I was a freshman in high school.

I laughed about it, cheerleading forme was very strenous yes, but it's not something to whine and bitch about.

if you're going to be a cheerleader, be prepared to get harassed and if you can't take it, then quit.

I'm not a cheerleader, and I'll never be coordinated enough to be one, but I'm definitely on your side. I think ANY and ALL cheerleading is a sport. Just because cheerleaders are stereotyped to be stupid, extremely perky, and usually blond, doesn't take away from the value and effort that goes into the SPORT of cheerleading. Besides, those stereotypes are so far from true.

In my school, the cheerleaders practice almost as much if not more than the varsity football team and they get the most injuries over any other sports teams. They also bring home the most trophies and do the most running (even more than the track team).

Cheerleaders unfortunately just acquired a bad reputation over the years. It's unfortunate, but that's life I guess.

VERONICA!

Im' apart of a marching band and we hear the same negative comments. . .And unfortunately its not a sport techincally. Just like band you are judge which means that its a controlled competition but I consider it a sport. Band members and cheerleaders pratice more than any other team at my school. Band practiced about 24 hours a week. Competitions and football games bring the number way up. Its just some critism that we have to take!

Oh, I totally agree on that. I joined colorguard this year and we started in July. It was 8 hour practices a day and bands do not get ENOUGH credit for all that they do. There are so many people that are talented and need to be recognized for it! It's amazing what marching bands can do.

Listen, Kirsten Dunst. Yes, professional cheerleading is a sport, because it requires dancing, choreography, etc. That thing you do at football and basketball games is not a sport. It's a way to show off your legs.
I find it incredible that a cheerleader can make noise about how she's tired of being called ditzy, and everyone sympathizes. But an art kid can complain that they can't even get their school to pay for new brushes, and people just ignore them. Welcome to our plight.
You want to be taken seriously? The stereotype is too ground in. If you want support as a "real sport", get your school to get people to come to competitions. call up some other schools and set up a meet. Compete. Sports are all about coming to the game, right?

I'm on your side, but if you want to shut them up, don't let it get to you. Being the bigger person says a lot more to others, and sets an example for them to follow, too. Keep doing what you're doing, as long as it's what makes you happy, and live your life for you (:=

I agree that competitive cheerleading is a sport. If golf is a sport then that can be one too.

I've been a cheerleader for five years now. I can understand where you guys are coming from saying just to not let it get to us, but, at least at my school, its alot worse than name-calling. I've been called a bitch in front of my whole class, ive had food thrown at me, and ive been threatened before. The first day that I went to sit with a new group (i dont hang out with the cheerleaders, i see them enough at practices), they all looked at me, saw i was a cheerleader, and told me to go away. Luckily I didnt because i am now best friends with all of them, because they got to know me... Now, there are alot of bitchy, mean girls on my squad, but im alot different than alot of those girls, so people shouldn't assume that all cheerleaders are the same. Its hard to get over it when its this bad, but i still hang in there and do what i love...
