I never thought of the roles Government plays in our daily lives and I was rescently asked some questions that caught me off guard:
Should the government have a role in the health and wellness of its population?
Do you think it plays a big enough role? If you were the chief policy maker, what would
you advocate?
My initial response was give me more time because the only real thing I know about Government is that it does to much butting in and regulating and not enough actually solving anything. People should be in charge of their own lives.
Then I though the government could spend more on public education so that students learn better (health and nutrition as well as everything else) and offer excellent meals as part of the deal.
Anyways look forward to hearing your comments and keep an eye out for my upcoming series on health and wellness which may or may not include the Gov's role.

I think the government should help promote more on healty eating habits, like that TV show that Shaq had going. They need to show us whats good to eat. But we have to remember that the government helps out the food companies more than us. So you have to watch out for corruption.
This is a nice thought, but no matter how much health education you shove down someone's throat they will still go out and eat what they want I believe.
Good blog.
I don't think that the best way to increase healthy eating habits is through policy. Although I do believe that state governments should prioritize serving fresh, healthy meals in public schools. Imagine having a cafeteria you actually wanted to eat in that served freshly cooked meals with tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. That would definitely beat my senior year of tuna sandwiches and leftover Sharky's fajitas.
It's been shown that the country's poorest are also the most obese. Single parents don't have the time or money to invest in fresh, healthy meals. Improving the poverty situation in our country would do wonders for our overall eating habits.

Instead of spending money on office chairs to use up all the money in the budget, they should make sure that kids get more out of their lunches, than just "edible" food. From what i've seen since I left high school, the vending machines are being made more edible for kids to eat from than the actual lunch, and they still probably make sure those are turned off during lunch, so the government will make sure they get their money backand then some for all the money they put toward that food kids are forced to eat on a daily basis.
So what are the poorer families spending there money on? Fast food...i don't think so.
If you're replying to my comment or the previous one, you should click on "reply", otherwise no one knows who you are talking to. And actually yeah, poor families are spending their money on fast food or cheap, unhealthy frozen food like chicken nuggets and french fries. Type "poverty obesity connection" into a search engine and see what comes up.

No wonder they're poor, they're spending valuable money on the crap from mcdonalds.
My mom works in a public elementary school and she sees kids everyday on the free-lunch program buying junk from the snack bar or vending machines so I'd believe it that they spend most of their money picking up fast food.
I feel that the education (instead of legislation) is the best way to get people into better habits...Freedom also means freedom to make bad choices.
