Female Circumcision? Should the U.S step in?

Tagged:

In many countries around the world especially in African countries there are groups of people who practice female circumcision. This is often a very brutal practice in which parts of the vigina are cut away, it could be the clitorous, the labia, all of it and in some areas they actually sew the vigina closed. Their are several reasons they do this, for one its custom and seen as a stage to go through to become a woman. But the main reason is to control the female's sexuality. They are sewed up until they married thus ensuring the fact that the female is a virgin. This can cause serious problems for the females such as long lasting physical pain, loss of sensation in sex and physical discomfort during sex. Many feel that the U.S should step in and make these groups stop this practice,  while others say we should mind our own business, they say it would be ethnocentric for us to impose our ideologies and practices on them, how do you feel about it? And what about male circumcision? Theres no scientific reason for it, as long as the foreskin is kept clean theres no problems at all and its thought that men who are circumcisized are losing sensation because of the removal of the foreskin. So why are we doing it to our sons?

As long as this female circumcision is not endangering women's lives (which it isn't, at least I don't think), I think we ought to allow the custom to be practiced. It's not our place to judge the customs of others. And like you said, it's not too different from male circumcision - the sole purpose is tradition. So, how do we have the right to tell them what to do and not to do with their own bodies?

I agree that it isn't our place to prevent another culture from practicing their tradition. I don't agree with what they are doing, but I bet they wouldn't agree with alot of our customs either.

That sounds wrong, we should stop this

Why should we stop it "contymua"? Could you expand further please?

America should keep its nose out of a lot of things, especially cultural traditions; however, for those concerned perhaps trips to Africa to educate and help said tribes without getting government involved would be infinitly more helpful.

Every country has their own set of customs and beliefs. Should we persecute them just because their customs are different than our own? Many parents in the US circumcise their sons or pierce their daughters' ears, is this considered torture?

Getting your clitoris cut out with a sharp rock without any anesthesia is hardly the same as getting your ears pierced. An ear piercing isn't circumcision, and it doesn't make it painful to have sex or pee. So no, it's not torture.

You neglected to mention anything about male circumcision. That is often done with little or not anesthesia (or has been in the past), and it could cause some serious problems. Granted, it's not getting cut with a rock... most in the US actually use scalpels now, but all the same...

I agree, but America needs to practice staying out of peoples business

I feel that someone (not necessarily the US) should stop it, but that's probably impossible. usually I respect people's traditions, but this is something that has always made me sick. If I were one of the girls going through that I would want it to stop. Just because it's a tradition doesn't make it okay. Lots of inhumane traditions have disappeared and this should be one of them. But I doubt anyone will step in to help because from a governmental standpoint, there is nothing to gain.

What goes on in other cultures in other countries is probably not our concern. I'm personally grossed out by this practice but maybe that is just how I was raised. In any case, there are a lot of worse problems in the world that deserve our attention.

But this practice is being brought to America with immigrants. Then it is at least to some extent becomes our business. To the extent that the operation is voluntary, then it seems to me that it is not different then any other elective surgery. To the extent that a young or underage girl is FORCED to have this surgery then it is flatly unacceptable. I think this operation should be proceeded by some mandatory counseling sessions with an independent licensed social worker to ascertain whether it is truly voluntarily.

And anybody in the USA who is caught mutilating a girl with a sharp rock or a piece of broken glass should have their privates removed with a butter knife. And then I personally have no problem if they are executed and then deported. Doing that to a girl is just barbaric!

Some Europeans are already actively putting successful efforts and therefore changes in regard to female circumcision in several African countries were, they are allowed by officials to create some understanding and awareness about this dreadful practice.

Nevertheless efforts put in place can still be regarded as limited considering the scale and amount of females that are subjected to this practice.

I support any form which can contribute for this practice to stop, the best way is to bring awareness amongst the ones that are supporting this practice in remaining a vivid reality.

There is no crime into (educating) interfering with (so called cultural my ***) patterns which are nothing more than (male invented) tools of women suppression which involve (torture) mutilation.

There are quite a few reasons why male and female bodies are equipped the way they are, to go shop pieces of just for the sake of male frustration is a crime which needs to be tackled.

Allowing to submit female children to a retarded horror scenario out of so called cultural reasons, needs to be questioned, discussed and addressed in deeper manner with the ones keeping these practices alive!

To turn away heads, ignoring while well knowing the true reasons which hide behind these bestial customs makes any of us as ugly and sick as the ones who perform in doing so.

To raise awareness has never hurt anyone, and if I did, it’s mostly one’s feelings, they need to get over it, period!

This is sick, and should be addressed internationally until it’s eradicated, rooted out, done with!

It is just plain fucking barbaric. I hesitated to use that word cause I don't want to seem like I think my culture superior to other cultures, but that's how I really feel.
