My Conservative Professor Says Some People Are Just Born Screwed, It's Their Problem

This post is sort of in conjunction with my "ratemyprofessors.com" post, in regards to that irksome radical conservative professor I mentioned. Before I begin I acknowledge the fact that many conservative students are probably sick and tired of listening to liberal professors, and with the flipped situation happening to me, those conservative students may come to believe that every liberal student should have an instructor like my political science one. However, after listening to this man rant on and on, just about ANY human being may come to believe that, with both political party ties aside, he is just a plain self-righteous bigot.

On the first day of class he issued a policy that if anyone wanted to argue with him, then the student must do so after his lecture, and the whole class is required to stay and listen. So far, no one has argued; either most students actually agree with him, or no one wants to be responsible for having to hold back the whole class. A few days ago he was discussing something about how the richest 10% are forced to pay the most taxes; this provided the foundation for his main point: people need to stop complaining about how unfair their life is. The term "people" was used with examples in reference to the middle class who complain about tax-cuts for the rich, spanning to the hurricane Katrina victims who were critical of the government at the time of the disaster. Then my instructor added in this ideology: Life was meant to be unfair. Certain people are just born screwed, and it's their problem, not the government's, and not anyone else's. He mentioned that everyone is responsible for his/her own self, and then he added these examples: people who are poor "chose to be that way", and they're responsible for building up their own life and shouldn't be relying on any checks from the government; similarly people who "choose to be gay" shouldn't be complaining about their limited rights because they chose to live in immorality, it's their problem, and they need to stop saying that life is unfair because "frankly, that's just the way it is."

If no one argues, then I will just have to go ahead and do so myself, regardless of what menacing glares I might receive from my classmates for making them stay after class to listen (especially with this class ending right around the time to eat lunch.) Or maybe I just won't wait for someone to speak up first, because perhaps by some miracle if I speak out first, then maybe some students will be more compelled to voice their opinions as well. With our professor arguing back, that might be one long class session.

I wish your professor were right, but he isn't. Some people are born screwed, but instead of keeping their problem to themselves, they like to moan and tell the whole world about it.

I can't imagine what a better life we'd have if only we could eliminate those damn, whiny, mindless liberals.

I believe the unfortunate can and in many cases should become our problem, but only voluntarily. I should be able to choose to bear the burdens of the bum down the street. Nobody should be forced to do so though. I shouldn't have to pay taxes to help those people. In reality, it is there problem. There are families and if not families, there are churches that love to help people. They might not be able to help all but the answer is more people should be generous, not the government.

Argue with him. He sounds like a jerk. Maybe it isn't right to require the rich to support the poor, but poor people certainly didn't "choose to be that way." Why the heck would anyone want to be too poor to support themself? And I won't even go into what I think of the whole "people choose to be gay" arguement. Just make sure that if and when you do confront him you have a well thought out and logical arguement, and aren't just ranting.
Maybe some people are just screwed, but that's only because the people who aren't so screwed want them to be.

This post was taken and reposted (without permission) in some sort of conservative blogging network called the "Free Republic." It's interesting what the members on that site had to say, and how the person who took it (without permission) sort of twisted my main points. If anyone here is interested in visiting my reposted article on the Free Republic, here's the web address:
