I believe it was JFK who said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." JFK was a great leader and president. He made some good decision in tough times which have made him pretty famous. And he was excellent at communicating to the people. This quote was ideal for the time period in which he was president, but today; not so much.
Today, our government is busy fighting terrorists in Iraq and Iran, and it's not doing much else. We have our usual police forces and public schools, but that's about it. What about free health care, free college education, free child care and things like these that are offered by so many other countries? Why can other countries like France, Canada, and England do this, but America (Land of the Free) cannot? Is it because our rulers are corrupt with greed? There is no doubt that money talks. Is it because we, citizens, aren't doing good enough? I'm so confused. We have the freedom thing pretty well taken care of. But democracy isn't just about freedom.
I believe the JFK quote should read more like this, "If you do what you can for your country, then ask what your country can do for you." Because in times like these, this is an important question to ask.
