There have been many problems in Africa since before I was born. There has been much suffering in Africa for many different reasons during different periods all around the continent. The most publisized problem in Africa has been AIDS, but there are more pressing issues than even that horrible disease. There are people in Africa who have to walk up to forty or fifty miles to get clean water for their families and there are some people who have no access to clean, drinkable water at all. The number one killer of people in Africa is not AIDS as many assume, but water-bourne illnesses. This is something that needs to be dealt with and I believe that everyone can help. And I know what a lot of people will say, "why aren't we taking care of America first?" Well I believe that America is very well taken care of. Most of us have everything that we need to get through live rather well off. The people of Africa who die every day because they do not have and cannot get the basic necessities of life are the ones that need our help now, at this moment. In February I attended, with four of my friends, a youth rally at George Mason University. This rally was called Passion `08. A lot of what they talked about had to do with all things Christian but another thing that they had to say was about helping people who couldn't help themselves. In two days, the Passion staff and all who attended the rally donated enough money to build about 14 wells. That gives 14,000 people in Africa clean drinking water for the rest of their lives. This a minor solution to a major problem but it is a start. There are over nine hundred million people in Africa, probably half without clean an drinkable water. This problem needs to be addressed on a much larger scale. I think that if the American people and European people pulled together to help out, we could make a real difference for so many people.
