The most controversial topic in America!

So here it is, the most controversial topic in the United States today. Almost so controversial that you are unable to even talk about it. That's right, abortion. Should it be legal? Should it be illegal? Should there be limitations on it if it is legal? There are so many questions to consider when discussing this delicate topic. For years we have heard many battles on capitol hill between politicians on both sides of the spectrum. However, is there room for those of us that have sort of a moderate position on abortion, like myself?
I have always been proud of the fact that I am pro choice, however, a couple of years ago after doing some research on what really goes on during an abortion procedure, I made a choice to have a more moderated opinion of the subject. I still do feel that abortion should be legal, and that a woman does have the right to choose, however, there should be limitations on how late in the pregnancy and abortion should be performed. This is what I have decided:(please note that I do not force my opinions on anyone, and welcome thoughts of others).
I feel that aborthion should not be legal after 20 weeks of pregnancy. This is because after thhis time the baby does have a viable chance outside the womb (although small), and I feel that after this point in the pregnancy if someone has carried the fetus this far to term, that they should be willing to accept the consequeences of their actions.
I also decided, that while I agree that abortion should be a choice for women, I do not agree with the act. I do not feel that it is humane to jam a pair of scissors into a helpless little baby skull. If there were a more humane way to perform an abortion(above mentioned is what I believe is a partial birth abortion) I probably would not be so uneasy about the concept.
I also believe that everyone deserves a second chance, especially if they are faced with an unwanted pregnancy due to rape or incest, and in this case, abortion should be an opportunity, granted a last opportunity.
Finally, I believe that abortion can be beneficial if both mother and baby are in jeopardy for serious complications, and if it would be more beneficial to terminate the pregnancy rather than risk the lives of either person.

I didn't even bother reading this whole thing because honestly, that is not the most controversal issue in America. Plain and simple.

So could you tell me what is the most controversial topic in America? Like I said, this was my opinion and I didn't ask you to agree with it.

I don't think I should need to show you what is more controversal. If you look at it from a individual stand point, then yes it is extremely important. When you look at it as an issue that effects our country as a whole, not as important. I beleive many more things are more controversal for our country as a whole.

Ex: War in Iraq
Health Care System
Poverty
Education System
Employment (or rather unemployment)
Immigration
Racism
Crime/murder rates
Olympics/Tibet
Every other Foreign Affair

Should I keep going? Plus abortion isn't a new and exciting topic, otherwise there would be a lot more than my post on your blog.

Ok, I definitely see your stand point. Maybe you are right in the fact that I was presenting it as more of a personal controversial issue rather than a controversial issue to the american people as a whole. Just because I wrote about it does not mean that I want to discount other extremely important issues as well, such as those you mentioned above, I really just wanted to blog about something that still comes up and is still very sensitive to so many people.

Okay, thanks for the clarification of your stance.

And what if the baby will die shortly after birth, in great suffering? What if the birth would kill the mother?

you don't know if it will. sometimes the mother will live. sometimes the baby will live. i know a lot of people who were told to have an abortion because the mother/baby would die; they decided to have the baby and nothing happened. machines and doctors aren't always right.

I think Kiota was asking about the times where the machines and doctors would be right. Perhaps you find out that your baby's heart only has 2 chambers, rather than 4. Maybe the baby's skull never formed and the brain is exposed. The baby is not going to survive for more than a few moments--if it even makes it out of the womb. Do you still think an abortion is unethical in this situation after the age of viability?

there is no humane way to have an abortion. no matter what you think: abortion kills. even if you dont think the baby is a human yet, you still kill something.

That is true. That is why it is so difficult to decide truly how to feel. It's one ofthose choices that eats at you forever, because if you feel one way it's wrong and if you choose to feel another way it's also wrong
