Is anyone else absolutely dumbfounded by the number of school violence occurring in our country? I live in a small town in Illinois, and it feels like it's getting closer and closer to home. After the NIU shooting, students wrote on the walls of Illinois State University that "ISU would be the next NIU." I feel like I'm waiting for my small town to be next. We've dealt with a tragedy once this year, and that is plenty for me.
Columbine and VT were like a shock to my system when I heard about them. It seems like everyday you can look in the newspaper and find something about a school shooting. The week of NIU, there was something like 3 or 4 shootings in that one week! It’s unbelievable! I don't understand what drives a person to go shoot up a school and kill innocent people. High school and college are not the end of the world. So what if you weren't popular or you were made fun of or whatever your reasons are? Go make something of yourself! Maybe I'm just ignorant, but if anyone out their can justify killing innocent people, I'd be glad to hear it.
I understand you're perspective, and I too am appalled by the amount of violence. And I'm not going to pretend I understand what would drive someone to shoot up a school or anything like that, but I think that's the point. It's something beyond our comprehension, something that cannot be computed by a "functional" person.

True, but don't you think it requires more than just hope? Hoping something won't happen, doesn't mean it won't. It's starting to get out of hand. I don't want to go to school in fear. I want to go to learn.

I think it's entirely unjustifiable, but those people who go on the killing rampages are sick, and diserve our pitty more than our hate.
I was absolutely scared when I heard about the NIU shootings. It was too close to home and I had friends at NIU. That was one shocking day.
