Blogging Do’s and Don’ts

I am telling you this so you can be popular here at ProU. Popularity here means points and reads and comments which can end up in cash for school. Money is good.

This site is called Progressive U for a reason. It is meant to give an opportunity to discuss progressive ideas. This is basically were YOU and PROGRESS meat up to share with the world. We appreciate fact based anecdotal ideas that are good info and entertaining. Anything can be progressive you just have to spin it right, more on another day.

To day I want to tell you some etiquette that will keep you from killing your own readership and chance for discussion. Have you ever seen Dumbo? You remember when all the big elephants shut Dumbo out of their circle. It did not matter the talents he had just the appearance was enough to get ignored. If you do not listen chances are, no matter how good the blogs maybe, you will be looked over because of what usually happens.

 Do Not….

…Spam blog. Spam blogging is were you post more then two blogs back to back. This is a blatant disregard to other bloggers. Seeing this tell us not to read your blogs because they are thoughtless and they will appear to be not worth the read. Pushing other valued blogs out of the recent listing will make the important stuff disappear and piss those that put in effort off. One person filled two pages of the recent list, we all wanted to stab him in the eye with a plastic spoon and he totaled about 15 reads combined for all the blogs he bombed us with.

…Comment on your own blog. If you have more to say either wait for someone else to bring it up or edit your blog. Do not comment on your own blog with a “.” or “…” or “?” or anything else that is ridiculous. This makes you a cheater and will get you banned or burned.

…Copy and paste. Putting someone else’s work in as your entire blog is either plagiarism or cheating yourself out of thought. This site is about your take on things, nobody else’s. If you want us to see an article put a hyperlink, or the web address, then discuss it yourself. You may summarize it and quote it a little bit so we know what YOU are saying but there is a rule of no more then four quoted paragraphs. We can read the news as well as you but we do not know how your views go or what you think we should do about whatever topic.

…Ramble to meet word count. Rambling on about the word count is stupid. This tells us you really have nothing to say and that we should stop reading your items. If you need it to be a blog add some facts, links or research your thought a little more. Doing this will make your point, facts, or thoughts more probable and qualified. You need to back up you statements anyway. If you can not make the 200 word thing but it is important enough to post as it is then put it in the forums.

Blog about a moderator’s PM to you. They are here for our help and support. You will look like an ignorant ass and piss them off… you will lose the fight because you were and are wrong. Take the help, say thanks and move on.

 Do…

… Post blogs in progressive light. Two a day at most to ensure well thought out but not at the same time.

....  Comment on responses. This will start a debate or discussion and bring new ideas to the table. This will earn you points and buddies (even if you do not agree).

…Add people to your list. Not everyone, just the good ones that comment well and write good blogs. This will help you polish your skills and thoughts. It will also gain you points in the long run.

… Rate. Not because you hate the person or because they do not have your views. Rate to save our time from reading terrible blogs. To let the person know they need to step it up, or to commend a job well done. You rate them, they rate you…progress will be made. If your going to give a poor mark at least comment and give tips on improvment!

Visit the introduce yourself forum. Introduce yourself and we will be willing to help and read your stuff. The intro will help us understand who you are, what you situation is, and were you are coming from; and it sets up your ‘voice’. This is also a good way to find new ‘friends’ and to get your name out. Welcome people and put a link to one of your favorite blogs (not necessarily your own) people will be curious. Also always check out you similar posts, higest rated postes, and the have you seen this yet list because you never know when you will find a golden nugget of a thought or a good chance to advertise.

This is not an all inclusive list but it should be a good start, or finish as it may be. Feel free to add any tips. Most importantly when people say stuff for you to correct, they are not being mean, they are trying to help you.

By now I am sure you know why you have not been getting reads or comments. Sorry for waiting to the last day to post this I have been busy. This is not a gimmick to get myself points as I am not a part of the contest. Your comments and feedback will count thought.

For more tips go to the Good blogging forums here and check them out and start building your readership for the next go around.

Do not make us butt your good blogs out like the big elephants did to Dumbo.

I am pretty sure I made more than half those mistakes. I will deffinetly put it into consideration next time I write a blog.

Oh people should really check how they write (grammar, spelling, etc.) and if what they say will really offend someone for no reason (you have to keep it civilized)
(I also made these mistakes)

also …Copy and paste. I don't exactly know how to quote someone... How do you do that?

You could use the 'quote' that i at the end of the comment or blog to be quoted near the 'reply' button, like I just did. You will have to erase the words you don't want. If you want to quote more then one part, as some people do in argument against the words, you could just copy the HTML codes that show up at the begining and end and place them in the respective areas. To me this is a little more ocmplicated then I like.

Or you could fo it the old what buy just saying who said what and using quote marks.

Or, you could write you response in a word document and inset the quote area and then transfer to your comment.

I can tell that you are growing and you will be fine if you stick around and learn during the non contest time.

I was thinking spork, actually.

This was a good, comprehensive list. It will really help newbies out, if they take the time to read it. I had to learn all this through trial and error. I am going to try to remember this come contest time and bump it up for everyone before the next round of madness begins!

And off topic, what a relief it is to see the points tally gone from the top of the page! Whew! I made it! I am so relieved that it is over, I don't even care about the outcome at this point. I feel like I've already accomplished something huge!

Score! I freaking love sporks. It's a spoon, fork, and lethal weapon all in one.

I want to invent the spife. It will be a spork with a flat edge on one side that can serve as a butter knife. To make it classy, I'll even throw in some flowery design on the handle.

I am kinda glad to see the points gone, too!

You'd better watch out when cross-breeding eatery. Lethal mistakes can be made. For example, see this: http://xkcd.com/419/

"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
- George Bernard Shaw

Thanks for paying attention. All the stuff I tagged really has nothing to do with the actual blog. More so a joke.

Oh okay next time reply to the comment your responding to or at least respond in the blog that the comment was made so that we (or I really) do not get confused.

This was in response to this blog > http://progressiveu.org/003046-all-middle-aged-married-couples-blur-toge...

Great points. I still don't get why people have to ramble to meet the word count. It's only 200 words. I have tried to write a good quality 200 word blog, but I think the closest I came was around 400. I've made comments much longer than 200 words.
