Belief- "we're never gonna beat this if belief is what we're fighting for"

Have you ever heard the John Mayer song "Belief"? If you have not, here is a link to the lyrics (http://www.lyrics.com/url.php?link=http://john-mayer-online-music.4t.com...). In this song, the refrain is as follows:

"we're never gonna win the world
we're never gonna stop the war
we're never gonna beat this
if belief is what we're fighting for"

Though a simple concept, these words really hit home for me. In today's world, for some reason it has become difficult to respect others beliefs and/or opinions. People always seem to believe that their opinions are always right. Unfortunately, it is these people who are often all too ready to fight for their “beliefs” without realizing the true definition of the word. A belief (according to dictionary.com) is:

1. something believed; an opinion or conviction: (a belief that the earth is flat)
2. confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof: (a statement unworthy of belief)
3. confidence; faith; trust: (a child's belief in his parents)
4. a religious tenet or tenets; religious creed or faith: (the Christian belief)

Being a scientist, I am always looking for proof. Being a personal of general faith, I understand that there are some things in life that you will never find proof for. I understand having faith in something, however, faith is a personal thing. It is something that cannot be confirmed or denied. Given this, John Mayer’s words – “We’re never gonna beat this if belief is what we’re fighting for.” - ring deep and should be reflected on by people throughout the world.
