I hate it when the bad stories run front page

.Dani.Liz.'s picture

Yesterday, I read an article in the paper- front page, about potholes. While I must admit that potholes are dangerous and it is necessary to know how to protect yourself against them, I do not believe it was front page worthy. Neither is the story that flooding may occur when the truth is, Elkhart will have floods coming up from the snow.

My problem is understanding why things such as the weather get front page just because they have enough information. Why do school conficts and government status changes and war info only get columns off to the side or even page 2?

In our publication, we try to make the most interesting things on the front page, thus encouraging the reader to follow through the rest of the paper.

This probably would have been better placed in the forum rather than as an entire blog...

But if you read Debatechick's blog "the front page" she explains her criteria of what she chooses to be on the front page.

So far as I know there are three people with the ability to promote a blog; considering the high number of posts that go up each day it's probably hard to keep up. ANd you can't promote every good blog, because then it would become common place.

You've only been here a week, but they used to have a Blogger of the Month where they featured a blogger - and every one complained about that; then they tried having several featured bloggers, and every one complained about that. I think no matter what they try to feature - we will find complaints.

And my understanding is that stories on the front page are to help promote the wide range of topics we generally cover on this site.

I thought this blog was about the stories that make the front page of newspapers? We have that problem with our newspapers here. They give the trivialities front page space and cram the important stuff in between the blaring advertisements that make up the rest of the papers.

Infuriating.

You know what, you're right - I completely misread the blog and thought she was talking about "our" front page at this site...

LOL, I even went to go look and was getting frustrated because I couldn't find a story there about potholes! I thought I was going crazy!

Don't feel bad. After I read your comment I thought I had it wrong so I went to search out the pothole story. Bummer. I was really wanting to read that story too! I mean, if someone can devote an entire post to potholes, kudos!

lol don't worry, the pothole story wasn't that interesting anyways. It was complaining about them and telling how they were caused and, golly gee, what to do if a pothole ever attacks your car!

I do think this sights front page is kind of confusing as well. I have no idea how they get to where they are really- I gave up on trying to figure it out after day 2. And besides, I'm not that worried about it because the front page here is usually interesting and makes you want to find out more.

Ya know, I've noticed that Fanaile and I have become quite adept at having enter conversations in others blogs. It's a high point of my PU experience.

There is a post on the front page of PU about how a blog posting makes it to the front page.

I suppose I can do without the pothole story if it sucked... but I gotta say, the attack of the potholes wouldn't be such a bad read if written in the right context!

Aww, I'm a highlight? Yay!

LOL to be honest it's kind of funny, I talk to you through blogs, and although I try to reply to everyone whenever I can, you're really the first that I've been able to hold a real conversation with via a blog site...

I try to reply to everyone or at least as many as I can, but yeah, we seem to end up conversing more than commenting. How odd. Two peas in a PU pod eh?

Blogging? easy. Debating? fairly standard stuff. Having a conversation in another's blog? Priceless!

Oh well see, now I'm going to have to go and find an interesting story about potholes cause I won't be able to get it out of my head... than I'll have to blog about it just to see if I can make it to the front page (experiment kind of thing, is it just the topic that made it to the front page, or did editors have a role in that?)

LOL

And yea, Fallon and I have had some really good conversations in someone else's blogs. LOL - of course our conversations in our own blogs end up short...
