What constitutes Entertainment and Art? What Separates them? In my opinion, Art is progressive, important, espressive and expirimental. Entertainment is pretty pictures, mystery novels, popular music and movies. Art is Amelie and entertainment is Dukes of Hazzard (barely).
With this distinction in mind: has anyone noticed the decline of art and the rise of pointless entertainment? People are calling entertainmers like britany spears pop artists. But can a song like "Hit me baby one more time" really be considered art? What has it changed in the way of music? Nothing. It could have been written in the 80's and it could have been written now, the fact that it was written in the 90's is purely a conciquence of Ms. Spears being bored in Alabama or wherever she is from.
Even if you don't like them, The Velvet Underground is art. They changed music. They were the beginning of the Punk Revolution. Ask any music historian and they will tell you that Punk died in the late 1970's (maybe two or three years after it began). Yet, you ask any teenager in America and they will tell you punk is alive and well in bands like Blink 182 and Green Day. But what has Green Day changed? Aren't the band of today spitting out watered down Nirvana?
What is causing this stagnation of music, art and culture? I believe it is the rise of Entertainment. Suddenly a movie like Gladiator can be oscar nominated. But did Gladiator change anything? Was it innovative or politically relevant? Or was it simply there for our entertainment?

"Art is Amelie"
Kudos for that comment. Kudos for everything you've said :)
Thank you!
Seriously. That is like one of the best movies ever made!
