"Cold cardinal...I see you through the snow/It's such a cold winter...and still you won't go/ Have you been forsaken? Have your friends all gone?/Cold cardinal...sitting all alone...Cold cardinal."

Currently it's dropping freezing rain outside my window. It's cold and dreary. No one would really want to be out in this...unless they're...um..unique?...Also outside my window is a tree. Inside this tree is a lone cardinal. It seems like a recurring thing, I always happen to see cardinals out in the treetops on cold snowy, rainy days all alone. I don't know the biology of a cardinal,so I'm not quite sure if that's normal or not. But when I look at that and then compare it with the rest of our culture,I'm really disturbed at what I find.

This may get me in trouble with PETA,but I'm gonna say it. Some extreme animal lovers always are concerned about animal cruelty. In some cases, they're perfectly right. But when they put animals above humans, then you start getting some problems. How so? Well let's look back to the cardinal. Most people, well, most girls, when they see something like a cardinal alone in the trees they feel utter pity for it. They want to take it in a humane way and bring it inside their house to keep it from dying of cold.

Now take that same person to the inner city. Will they have the same compassion? Depending on who they are, they probably won't. They'll want to get out of there quicker than a deer in the sights of a hunter. And you don't have to be an extreme animal lover to feel this way, I know myself and I know that there have been times when I would rather care for an animal over a human. What about all the poor people? What about those suffering in 3rd world countries? What about the children in Africa, abandoned and dying with AIDS? Does anybody else see America's hypocrisy here? Face it! We would never take an African child with AIDS off the street because they might get mud on the floor or spread a disease to someone else or maybe even, heaven forbid that this happen, to the family pet.

So my point is that we need to strive together to show compassion on those who are shown it least. If we would care for a cold cardinal, then we need to also be willing to take care of a cold and destitute person.

"Cold person...alone in the crowd/It's such a cold winter...and no one hears him cry aloud/Why are you alone?Have you not a friend?/Cold person...don't make this your end...Cold person..."-taken from a song I wrote..
