I was reading about this woman who avoided marriage for 40 years on AlterNet and I was thinking, why do you get married?
Marriage is a social concept that had been force upon us for thousands of years. The purposed of marriage from the older days was to make sure that the father can passed down his property (daughter/women) to the husband. Women were not considers a person but a property and any property pass down to her goes to a male relatives or her husband.
Another purposed of marriage was to protect the women from outside dangers (since it was consider a men's world) and continue the cycle of life though reproduction, thus the reasons for polygamy.
Also, polygamy came into existence because of the warrior days, where the men goes to wars or get killed by other clans member thus leaving a shortages of men which resulted in marriage to multiple women since the women doesn't go to wars or engage in dangerous lifestyles.
In the old days, there was no DNA or paternity test thus there was an emphasis on woman virginity. The only way to know that your wife is carrying your child is to make sure that she is a virgin on her wedding night (although prostitution was the world oldest profession).
Fast forward a few centuries, and you reach modern day America. In the USA, there is a 50% divorce rates and premarital sex. Our society had become more tolerances of living together without a marriage certificate, single mothers, homosexuality, and all kinds of things.
Yet people still get married. So the question left now is:
Why do you get married?
If you are homosexuals, why do you want to get married?
What does marriage means to homosexuals and heterosexuals?
What is the purposed of marriage, given that one doesn’t need marriage to reproduced or protect women from outside dangers?

While I would still be with my husband regardless of if we were married, there are a number of benefits to be had by being legally married. Having both of us on one insurance policy is but one of the perks, as is different tax benefits for filing jointly.
I am treated as evil by people who claim that they are being oppressed because they are not allowed to force me to practice what they do. ~D. Dale Gulledge
I got married because I wanted to share my life with my husband/partner/best friend. I do want to have kids one day and my husband still does protect me. Maybe not from evil enemies, but he does a pretty good job of keeping me in check. I try to keep his feet on the ground as well. I'm convinced that marriage is the most difficult partnership and commitment, but that it is also the most rewarding. Too many people give up or start out too early before marriage truly shows all that it can be.

I have not been married so I have no idea. But I believe people get married because that is someone they truly love and is the best person for them.
Homosexuals have the same experiences we do so I believe it is for the same reason as heterosexuals.
Also not taking as much taxes out is a plus :) lol

O ye people! Fear your Lord who created you from a single soul and of its kind created its mate, and from them twain spread many men and women; and fear Allah, in Whose name you appeal to one another, and fear him particularly respecting ties of kinship. Verily, Allah watches over you. [ch 4, v 2 Quran ]

Marriage in Islam:
http://www.alislam.org/library/links/00000137.html
Women should consider to stand upon their both feet “first” before engaging in marriage, to get married before the age of 30 is the best recipe for divorce.
It’s actually plain stupidity,
Marriage is not a fairytale, it represents more than
“I believe love you, I think love me”
The original goal and concept of marriage was, and still is today a way, to ensure any offspring which sees the light of day to get entangled into the structure of worship.
This is the same reason why structures of worship “HATE” gay individuals, because gay induviduals are unlikely to reproduce offspring.
Marriage represents all the human trauma which goes around, why? Because some amongst like to mingle, it’s human nature when lingering in the physical.
More and more women are finding their way (freedom) to express this nature, the (male) frustration it brings to life is being deled with as we speak, freedom lies ahead for all to enjoy from…
Women rule,
After the age of 30, self-realization should come in place to understand there is no need to engage into it!
