I'm taking AP Government this year (Go SENIORS!!! lol)Right now we're looking at liberal v. conservative v. everything else. We took this little survey, and saw where everyone came out, and our assignment is now to find out where other people that we know fit. So...
Please take the time to do this survey for me. It's only 20 questions; fairly simple, right?
DIRECTIONS: Listed below are twenty position statements regarding various aspects of American Public Policy. Read each statement carefully. Then examine the list of choices to the responses and assign that point value. Your list of choices are:
- 100 points--Strongly Agree. This means that this is exactly the way you believe about this issue, give or take a few minor discrepancies.
- 67 points--Agree. You generally agree with this position, but would allow for some modifications based on certain situations or circumstances to fit your belief.
- 33 points--Disagree. You generally disagree with this position, but would allow for some modifications based on certain situations or circumstances in order to fit your belief.
- 0 points--Strongly Disagree. This statement is almost the exact opposite of what your belief is on this issue.
PUBLIC POLICY STATEMENTS: WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THE FOLLOWING?
- In regards to Abortion and protecting life, the government needs to increase its restrictions on the current abortion policy. Currently, because of Roe v. Wade, the federal abortion policy is that the states choose; most states (if not all) have legalized abortion.
- The government must continue to support the Social Security system, and NOT let it be managed through private groups. I think this one is pretty much self-explanatory...
- There is nothing wrong with allowing school-organized prayer in our public school system. Again, self-explanatory.
- There needs to be a new program of national health insurance to cover ALL Americans and to lower the cost of medical care. ALL being the key word...
- The definition of marriage is the legal union of one man and one woman, and the government should not force states to recognize other "alternative lifestyles" as marriage. Gay marriage...
- The government needs to enact stronger laws to protect the environment from abuse and pollution.
- Federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and a national gun registration system is a violation of the Second Amendment and an invasion of the privacy of honest citizens. The Second Amendment states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
- What Americans need are public schools that compete with one another and are held accountable for results, not giving parents vouchers to be able to send their students to private schools. In case you don't know what vouchers are, let me explain: Let's say your child is in school, and you feel that s/he is not getting a good education. So, you tell the school district that you aren't happy with your child's education, and you are taking your child out of the public school system and putting them in a private school. This private school has a tuition of $5,000 annually. In 13-14 years of mandatory education in a public school, a school district spends in the $10,000 range per child. You ask the school board for a voucher so that you can afford the tuition for the private school: the school board pays half, and you pay half.
- The government needs to restrict the content of sexually explicit material that is easily available to minors on the Internet. Easily available to minors being the key words...
- ALL Americans should be guaranteed a minimum annual salary. Again, ALL being the key word.
- The government should maintain strict quotas policies on the number of immigrants coming into the United States and do everything possible to stem the tide of illegal immigration. Everything is the key word in this one...
- The government needs to lower the cost of medicines to solve the problem of elderly Americans being forced to choose between buying food or buying medication. Elderly is the key word.
- The government should not provide funding for artistic expression that is considered graphic or offensive to society. Let's say you are an up-and-coming artist, and a major art museum has agreed to display your works. Unfortunately, your painting shows (in great detail) rape, or child molestation, or something of that nature, for the purpose of bringing the issues into the light to the general public, since it's an uncomfortable topic for most people to address. Should the government provide funding for you?
- The government should play a leading role in solving America's problems because of their complexity. Leading role is the key...
- There is no need to end the death penalty in the United States just because of a few technical or legal mistakes that have occurred over the past several years. For example, the incorporation of DNA testing into the court rooms...
- The government should expand its commitment to Jobcorps by increasing the number of young adults employed in public service jobs at taxpayers' expense. If you don't know what Jobcorps is, look it up
. - In order to bring about a safer America, the government needs to restrict the rulings that expand the rights of an accused person. For example, the Miranda law, which says that police officers have to say: "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you do not choose to have an attorney, one will be provided for you by the state. Do you understand your rights?"
- Citizens who have been traditionally discriminated against should be given special treatment in order that they may "catch up". Here's the affirmative action question...The teacher told us that, at Harvard Law School, some white kids were denied entrance. When they found out that some black/Hispanic kids were accepted, even though they had worse credentials, just because of their skin color, they sued. Basically, reverse affirmative action.
- The American flag should be protected as a symbol of our country and laws should be passed to make it a crime to desecrate it. As it is, you can burn the flag legally (freedom of expression), but burning a draft card is illegal.
- The budget surplus (if it existed) should be used to improve social programs rather than reducing personal income taxes.
Now add up your total points for the ODD-numbered questions ONLY and divide by 10. Give me the number (in addition to your answer to each individual question...) This is your FREEDOM versus ORDER score.
Now add up your total points for the EVEN-numbered questions ONLY and divide by 10. Give me the number (again, in addition to your answer to each individual question...) This is your FREEDOM versus EQUALITY score.
*This survey is completely confidential (as far as confidentiality on the Internet goes, of course; if you post it as a comment, confidentiality is not guaranteed, but that's your choice. If you want it to be completely confidential, send it to me in a message.); the only thing that will be used are the numbers; no names will be identified. We are going to plot these on a graph in class, and your political leanings will be identified (Liberal, Libertarian, Populist, or Conservative). If you want to know which way you lean (according to this survey), just let me know

I don't understand your question...:)

I roll out of town like a run-away train. I'll do as I dare, let them call me insane. I'll never sit on the sidelines of life, I'll dance every dance. While I still have the chance.
Some of my responses aren't accurate reflections which skew the results simply because on some of them I didn't agree nor disagree, but didn't have that response as an option. I either had to agree or disagree when in reality, I don't agree or disagree with the position as it was stated.

Satan is crying on the side of the road:
Passerby: "Why are you crying?"
Satan: "They always blame everything on me"
Your explanation of Roe V. Wade in #1 is incorrect. Under Roe, the states do NOT choose--they are not allowed to completely prohibit abortion.
And on #5, nobody except perhaps the most radical gay advocates, want the "[federal] government to force states" to recognize gay marriage, but plenty of folks would disagree with the first half of the question as well. A few different questions are all getting tangled together in that one.
