So, I've Joined...My friend the vegetarian

This is my first post on Progressive U so I figured I'd write about something my friends and I have disscussed before so I can share it with the world.

Two of my best friends are Vegetarians.  They both have thier own views as to why they don't eat meat and eat differently in terms of dairy and other similar products. My best friend since 7th grade, who we'll call Anna, will not consume milk in a milky form.  Should it be in a product she will eat that product but wants nothing to do with it beyond that.  She does drink soymilk and I must admit I know enjoy drinking soymilk more than regular milk.  My other friend, who we'll call Mae, drinks speical milk that is labled that it comes from happy cows who only ate grass and were not given any other supplements.  One of the biggest problems my friends have is when we go out to eat in a resturant.  I never noticed how few vegetarian meals there were on a menu until I went out to lunch with my friends.  Anna had a very hard time finding something she could eat that had no meat.  One time we went out and she ordered plain, just cheese, quesadila which arrived with pieces of unidentifiable possible meat product in a few of a pieces.  Needless to say that quesadila was not eaten.

What do you think about the whole process of being vegetarian?  Do you think something should be done to add more vegetarian meals to resturant menus?

See my 'Intense Fear of Eating Meat' blog...but I just have them hold the meat...or revamp the ingredients. Something doesn't have to be labeled VEGETARIAN to be it. I eat Tofu from Chinese places, along with all the vegies, and just make up whatever. I am paying, so restaurants easily oblige. Today, I am eating a little chicken because I have large bruises all over my body because I am protein deficient right now-I eat it when I obviously need it, but only then. Usually I make beans or have Tofu.

Americans have a love affair with meat and eat way too much of it! I stopped eating meat after I graduated high school. I still eat eggs, dairy, and some fish, but no red meat or poultry. It can be really frustrating to find something on a menu that's vegetarian, and I wish more chain restaurants (the places that cater to the most people) would recognize vegetarians as part of the population. We're not all hippies who live in communes. We want to eat out, too!
