This society is not one of quiet, nor of rest. It seems too much to have a twenty-second silence for contemplation when tlaking ot friends; it is uncomfortable for many to simply sit out and hear the noises that nature has to offer. With the creation of our vast technological devices, I think that we can become out-of-touch with reality and what most of the world lives like. It even seems to inferior for a person to not own a television or computer or a CD player.
These things are pleasant to have; it is obvious I am now using the internet in order to tell a vst number of people my thoughts. Without it, I could not communicate with so many people in all stretches of the earth, as least not as easily.
The problem comes when these things are more important to us than actual people and things around us, when it is our lives to use technology. That is the state that many people are in. This causes many to have this mentality that what they want must come to pass instantaneously. If there is no feed from technology, people feel lost and don't have an idea with what to do with themselves. These things are tools and are for fun, but I've noticed that every once in a while I've put myself in a position in where I think I must have input and be entertained.
What sort of a future does that make for us? Will we be hanging on every word that is said on the tv? Will we be able to function in the world, or even relate to those who do not have what we have? Will we burn out? Will reality and unreality merge in our minds? Will children never grow up in needed ways?
An entertainment-absorbed society ironically does not give space for rest; information overload doesn't give much space for individual contemplation. We need to make time for clear thought in silence; jail and school shouldn't be the only places. The new technologies we have should not be served by us; we should be served by them.
