Every Spring, high school juniors and seniors across the country prepare for prom. From renting tuxes to finding the perfect shoes, the costly event comes with unimaginable hype. At my high school, a couples ticket runs about 60 dollars, while a singles ticket is about 40. Last year, many of my friends and I decided to go together on couples tickets. It meant the difference between a 40 or 30 dollar ticket, and came with the added bonus of having "a date." This year, however, our school has announced that couples tickets are being reserved for legitimate "couples." and those individuals without a partner for the evening will be asked to purchase singles tickets instead. I have all sorts of problems with this new regulation, the first of which is, how do they intend to enforce it? While two girls going on a couples tickets will certainly be confronted, a heterosexual couple going as friends may not be. Basically, this is discrimination against singles. When it comes to the monetary aspect of it, the prom commitee really should care either way. The purpose of the couples ticket is to give a discount to individuals purchasing two tickets. Regardless of their gender, or whether they are a true couple or merely friends, two tickets are still being sold, and a discount still seems warrented. Prom costs enough without the extra expense of a singles ticket, and with the added discrimination, I'm not sure I'll be going this year.

You make a good point. The whole purpose of couples tickets becomes less and less with the rise of single people going to prom. What is even the point of a couples ticket? Besides the slight discount it proves nothing else. There's no special dinner meal or picture package for a couple so why a couples ticket? I don't see the revelence anymore, if there ever was one.

My school didn't do that and the fact your school does is pretty bogus. I don't understand how your school is going to challenge some couples tickets. Do you mean theyre going to track students down?
