How Easy is it to Quit Smoking?

Tagged:

It's always been said that it's hard to quit smoking. That's why we have products such as nicorette and truth commercials, right? But something interesting came up last night whilst I was chatting with a friend. He showed me a photo of his computer desk and sitting right next to the computer was a frequently used ashtray. He told me he quit since the photo was taken, saying it's easy to quit smoking cold turkey. All he did was eat brownies instead of smoke. I've never smoked before so I don't know how addicting it is. Does anyone have a personal experience that's similar/different to that of my friend's?

I don't have a personal experience, but from what I've seen, your friend was lucky, but usually that isn't the case. Fortunately my uncle has quit smoking and now he hasn't smoked in 3 years, but he had intended to quit at least 20 years ago. He tried so many times, but never prevailed. So if your friend quit easily cold turkey, then more power to him! I think smoking is absolutely disgusting, so I love hearing about people quitting.

Yeah, i've spoken to more people since then, and they've told me it's hard to quit. I guess he had it easy since he hadn't been smoking for very long. Even though it was hard for him, I'm happy your uncle was able to quit. It's a great inspiration that he never stopped trying.

Almost everyone in my family is addicted to smoking cigarrettes. My grandmother never gave up smoking even though she barely had any lung capacity and she was on oxygen all the time. I believe it is very addicting because I have watched family and friends try to quit unsuccessfully.

I'm sorry they were unsuccessful in quitting. But as peppermintchop said above, her uncle took 20 years to quit. Hopefully your relatives will be able to quit too. It takes a lot of time and effort to succeed. Good luck to them.

My mom has been trying to quit smoking for years. Every time she tries to quit, shes successful for a while but then something always happens, and she starts smoking again. She always complains that when she does quit smoking, she starts eating alot of junk food and gains weight. I think that she should work on quitting smoking first, and once shes made it a good amount of time, work on losing the weight that she has gained. I just want her around for a long time!

It's great your mom is trying to quit, just keep on supporting her, and as peppermintfrost stated above, it took her uncle many attempts to finally succeed. I'll be rooting for your mom to succeed!

Most people can't quit cold turkey. One has to gradualy stop smoking. Either way, quiting this addiction is hard

Agreed. But I also think that the sooner you decide to quit, the easier it tends to be.

tell your friends that eatting brownies instead of smoking will cause the worst weight gain of his life. When you quit smoking even if you live on a healthy diet, which most smokers do not, you gain weight from the loss of certain chemicals in your body that the cigarettes gave you.

i too have had an addiction experience, and i was able to give it up like there was no tomorrow, but that is because i didn't feel the need to smoke anymore. It was all because of God's mighty healing power.

Also, my best guy friend just tried to quit smoking, and it's really hard for him to becaues he goes to school away from all of his friends, and when he can't get a hold of us in his stressful times he has difficulties staying away from those cancer sticks.. it's funny because a lot of people smoke because they are stressed, then you just have those teenagers who smoke because their friends do. Doesn't it just suck that some people fall into line with other individuals because they are afraid that they won't fit in? I guess I am sort of straying off the topic though...

Anyway, just make sure to tell your friend to eat healthier and run some.. just so that way he isn't unhappy with himself and starts smoking again, that happens a lot.

Fortunately, this particular friend has already overcome his addiction and is eating normally. But I do have another acquaintence who says he smokes because of stress. He has is friends with him, but that's the problem, because his friends smoke too and encourage him to do so. In fact, I think it is his friends who introduced it to him in the first place. I don't talk to him that much at school, but my friend tells him to quit all the time. Her voice is just drowned out in the midst of the rest of his friends. I also want to congratulate you on quitting and trusting God to guide you along the way.

When you are trying to quit smoking, you are trying to quit an addiction... so you have to replace it with something else... excercise is how i stopped. I really wanted to quit smoking but it was actually pretty hard. So I lifted weights instead, which is actually one of the best ways to go about doing it and here's why. When you work out, your body releases endorphines (chemicals that make you happy) into your brain, and these endorphines produce a natural high. This, in turn, gets addicting, and you actually get addicted to feeling good about yourself!

seems like the ideal way to go :)

actually i have a very similar personal experience. I did something supposedly far mroe addicting, though not for a very long period of time. I did cocaine for a brief period (about 1 month). However, anyone who knows this drug, knows that you can get addicted after one try. i was addicted, thats why it lasted a month. but one day, i woke up and said "i really don't want this" so i just stopped right away. I didn't do it to be cool or fit in, i did it just to try it at first, and it caught me, but i realized my will power was greater and i just stopped.

that's great you finally decided to quit and was able to stop right away. congrats, you're very strong-willed.
