Salvia is probably a lot less known than marijuana is, so let me just give a brief description of it. It is a plant, like cannabis, but when smoked has fairly strong hallucinogenic effects. The duration is much unlike cannabis, in that its peak lasts for only about 5 minutes, and the overall "high" is only about a 20 minute affair.
Now let me tell you how, exactly (well exactly as far as I know, and from what ive been told and experienced) the effects differ from one another (take this with a grain of salt, because, as with all drugs, effects and highs from person to person differ)
Cannabis makes you perceive the world you are in, in a different way. Whether that be something is funnier, things make you happier/sadder, etc. etc. you are firmly rooted in this world, and what you see is perceived slightly differently from a sober person. You get happier, hungrier (the "munchies"), a varying degree of euphoria, sometimes more paranoid than usual. (the list of effects goes on, but these are the basic ones that most people will experience)(http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_effects.shtml for more information about its effects)
Now Salvia, as you put down the smoking device, and wait for the world around you to be changed (as in you wait to see walls turn blue, and melt and stuff like that) you are taken to a completely different world of intense colors, impossible scenarios, and overall craziness. You loose most, if not all control of your body (moving around is far far more difficult) and the world your in ranges from intense fear, and paranoia to uncontrollable laughter, and confusion. A lot of people have reported, mostly during the initial minute or two, when you are completely tripping balls, being a part of something (like a locker, a twist tie, everyday things that are usually inanimate, etc. etc.) whole, and having the sensation of being held down by some known force). And these things above happen in the first 5 minutes. Once you start coming down, things become a lot easier to manage, and you become rooted again in the real world. (http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia_effects.shtml for more information on its effects)
Now the biggest difference between marijuana and Salvia, is that Salvia is legal, while marijuana is not, at least where in Connecticut (http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia_law.shtml#state for more information on its legality). To get Salvia, all you have to do is go to a gas station that sells it, pick up some screens, a bong, and a butane lighter, (a regular lighter, and bowl or other bowl-like smoking device would suffice, but bong/butane lighter/screen is, as far as i kno, the best conditions in which to smoke it) and go at it. It takes very very little Salvia to reach the point in the above paragraph (like 1/3-1/2 of a bong/bowl pack).
Now, i am not calling for the either's legal status to be changed (although i have opinions on whether or not marijuana should be legal) I am just showing some comparisons between a legal drug and an illegal drug. Salvia is a legal, fairly strong psychedelic, and does have recreational, as well as healing and divining purposes. It has much less abuse potential than marijuana,, but except for the brevity of the high, it is (in my opinion) much stronger of a drug than marijuana could ever be.
like here http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia.shtml for more information on it. I am sure i missed something, or misspoke about something, so if anyone finds any discrepancies with what i wrote, please respond and tell me them!

Well spoken.
