Should a high school student have a part-time job? There are many pros/cons. For instance, a PRO would be the student would earn money to spend however they please(car, clothes..). A CON is that statistics show that students who hold a part-time job have problems in school(i.e. fighting, decreased amount of achievements earned, bad grades..).
I had a part-time job my sophmore year in high school and my grades went down. I went to an all A/B student to receiving my very first F on quarter. Knowing this I wouldn't recommend students having a part-time job..But do you think some people can handle it better than others? Do these statistics sterotype just one group of students.
In a Reader's Digest, a young man was working at Applebee's. With the money that he earned at Applebee's he was able to buy steroids. Everyone on his team was using and to fit in he did too. If he had not had the part time job he would not have been able to afford the $200 drug.
One young lady said that she had a part-time job and it was the best thing she could have ever had. She learned how to work with bosses and co-workers and she developed better skills in a particular field of work. She commented saying that it is one thing to learn information and techniques out of a textbook(i.e. sharing) but it is another thing to put those skills to use. Sort of like learning a foreign language. Do you really think that in Germany they speak the 'textbook' German that is taught in classrooms? The answer is no and I know this from personal experience of being a foreign exchange student there.
After hearing both sides of the issue about students and their part-time job? What do you think? Would you do it yourself or encourage someone else to have a job after knowing the facts?

I started my first job as a junior in high school, working part-time, but once senior year came around, I started working more hours, nearly making it to 40 hours per week. I was surprised when I got my test scores and my report cards; I had straight A's and a stable GPA. I feel that I managed my time wisely, used Study Hall to it's full extent and spent the time that I had besides work to do homework/study. It all depends on how you look at it -- whether or not you think you can take on the challenge of balancing both aspects of life.
Like you siad, "some handle it better than others." Personally i didn't because of sports and high level classes in hogh school. But it was not for drugs, like teammates of mine. It is though a whole heck of a lot harder in high school than in college. Ive got a job now that i go to in between my classes on campus. It gives me money for necessities and also gives me time in the afternoon to do homework and play on my intamural vball team. But their is no one right or wrong answer.... it all depends.
I think it depends on the person. I didn't have my first job until my freshman year of college and I don't regret that choice one bit. Now, with bills rolling in and each semester's tuition right around the bend, I don't have a choice. I'm glad that I enjoyed the time that I didn't need to work, even if I didn't have everything I wanted. I wish I could just focus on school, but in the meantime, I'm learning things at my job and like I said before, paying bills.
