I've read one too many blogs today where the author states that they believe homosexuality is a CHOICE.
Folks, I'm here to tell you it's NOT A CHOICE.
I'm gay and the only choice that I had was in admitting it to myself and coming out.
I get pretty agitated when Bible-thumpers come at me with scripture telling me how I'm going against God and how I'm doomed to hell for living this lifestyle and that they take pity on me. Well please! KEEP your pity, don't you understand that it was the very same GOD who made me this way? Did you perhaps forget the lesson of LOVE that He taught through his only begotton son, Jesus Christ?
As regards religion, I'm pretty God put gays on earth to see which of His followers would really hear His lesson and listen to him.
I was always taught that God loves the sinner but hates the sin. I was even told by my pastor that I was going through a "phase." Lifetime phase, sir.
I apologize to all those reading this rant o' mine that easily take offense, but for those who haven't had to deal with others trying to figure you out, determine if there's some chemical problem going on in your brain as the reason for why you are who you are, stamp you out and erradicate you from the planet, deny you civil & human rights, maybe you can understand why I'M taking offense. I didn't choose to be gay, but now that I've figure out who I am, I wouldn't want to be any other way.
I heard these lyrics for the first time this morning and they really touched me. Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls wrote them after she and her music partner, Amy Ray, were turned away from several venues in North Carolina (I believe) BECAUSE THEY WERE/ARE GAY. I've never come across two more gifted musicians, and they were denied because of their sexuality which they had no choice over.
"Philosophy Of Loss" by the Indigo Girls
Welcome to why the church has died
In the heart of the exiled in the kingdom of hate
Who owns the land & keeps the commands
And marries itself to the state
Modern scribes write,
and Jesus Christ cries:
Everyone is free
And the doors open wide to all straight men & women
But they are not open to me
And who is teaching kids to be soldiers?
To be marked by a plain white cross?
And we kill just a little to save a lot more
The philosophy of loss
There are a few who would be true out of love
And love is hard
And don't think that our hands haven't shoveled the dirt
Over their central American graveyards
Doctors & witch hunters stripped you bare
Left you nothing for your earthly sins
Yeah but who made this noise?
Just a bunch of boys
And the one with the most toys wins
Who is teaching kids to be gamblers?
Life is a coin toss
And of course what you give up is what you gain
The philosophy of loss
Whatever has happened to anyone else
Could happen to you & to me
And the end of my youth was the possible truth
That it all happens randomly
Who is teaching kids to be leaders?
and the way that it is meant to be
the philosophy of loss

I also don't appreciate people trying to probe into the mind of a homosexual or trying to analyze them as if their something other than just human.
I agree with you in saying that I don't think that it is a choice. It's just as natural as liking the opposite sex.
Have a nice day.
Hi Kristina,
Thank you for your comment - I appreciate you voicing this.
You have a nice day too!

I consider myself to be hardcore Catholic but I'm also vice president of the GSA (gay straight alliance) at my school. You are so right. A really good friend of mine came out two years ago and was surprised when his dad didn't get angry. He was also surprised when his mom started freaking out. She took him to a doctor to have a blood test because she thought it was hormones or something. She's handling it a little better, now. My favorite teacher, who also happened to like the Indigo Girls, once told us that the oppression faced by gays would one day be looked at with the same embarrassment as we look at slavery with today.
To sum it all up: rock on.

Hi Writerfish,
Thank you for your comment - I actually haven't heard the bit about looking back on it with the same shame as slavery, but I find it terribly encouraging!
I hope your GSA does well and that you achieve all the goals you set for yourself!
Take care, and thank you again -
Liz

In regards to the whole religion "You're sinning for being gay" thing, I've got this to say. I'm not too religious and my opinion on God is that I respect God and know that God knows. So yeah, I'd just say that there's nothing wrong with someone's sexuality. It's not even that big of a deal to most people I know.
