The problem with Stem Cell Research

Tagged:

When it comes to helping people, what will some people do, and I know someone is going to read this and think I'm against stem cell research. The truth is, I'm not. I am against the type of research scientists are doing. Because stem cell research can be vital to another person's survival, it is an important topic to research and test. The problem is the type. There are many different types of research scientists could be doing and are trying to do on a small scale, but not enough. The specific type I'm talking about is taking the cells from an umbilical cord and changing them into the cells that another person may need. These cells perform basically the same as a fetial cell except it isn't killing anything. The cells are simply being taking from the umbilical cord and changed into whatever cell is needed. My question is, if we have the ability to take something from the umbilical cord, which is thrown away anyway, instead of killing a innocent potential human being, why aren't we. It isn't like the costs are dramatically different. The question is the moral. I disagree with a potential human being that could be the smart or athletic being used in the place of the cells from a normally discarded item. This is a growing problem that can be fixed now.

Embryonic stem cells can be taken from a live fetus and have the fetus mature to an adult. It doesn't kill the baby, contrary to popular belief. Now, post-abortion fetuses can also be used for embryonic stem cells. It is simply safer to the overall health of the baby to use post-abortion stem cells because it doesn't mean putting the mother under so they can cut her open and extract the needed materials.

Also, a lot of the embryos that are being used are embryos that storage facilities are going to throw away anyway. These things aren't kept forever.

And embryonic stem cell research is not the only type of stem cell research going on. It constitutes a pretty small portion of stem cell research.

Wow, I seriously don't think you knew what you were talking about when you wrote this. Most scientists work at LEAST 60 hours a week, only to be paid not much more than a schoolteacher. My life revolves around my research, which just so happens to be working with stem cells harvested from adults. What else do you want us to do? I work all I can- sometimes I go for days without sleeping just to work on research. What are you doing and what sacrifices are you making to help the cause?
