Taiwan Politics

I have never really been into politics. However, as I have come to realize the importance of politics especially in Taiwan, I have tried to learn more about it. There are two main sides in Taiwan, those who want independence and those who want to still be a part of China. The Taiwan election in March has drawn a lot of interest from those in the United States, especially those who have family in Taiwan. My mother for example, is flying back just so she could vote in the election. My dad, as well, is also taking a week off from work to travel to Taiwan to vote. This has been one of the most highly anticipated elections, considering the amount of people, like parents, who are flying back just to vote. The current president of Taiwan is pro-independence which has decimated Taiwan economy (from a tangential evidential standpoint). The country has received no help nor protection from China, but lives in constant fear of being attacked by other, much larger countries. Therefore, my parents feel that the independent party should not and cannot win again. It could further decimate the Taiwanese economy. My parents feel that the anti-independent party must win to ensure China protection and economy stimulation.
