Do you really want to know?

I was sitting in a science classroom once, and I normally never listen, but something my teacher said grabbed my attention. She was explaining the factors of the human body and had progressed to the topic of genes. That particular day I learnt some of the wierd and wonderful things that can be done with them.. Such as cloning, but what struck me was that scientists can now determine exactly when you are going to die! I personnally feel that this is ridiculous - a life ruiner. Who in their right mind would want to know when thier precious life is going to end? Just imagine that you did decide to find out, you would be miserable, you would try and do all of the things that you have always wanted to do but never got round to it - never got the chance. How would you cope knowing that you would be leaving your children in a certain length of time? Simple answer - you wouldn't. And would you like to know the facinating thing... It's not always 100% accurate! So now imagine putting yourself through all that worry, stress and dread - to still be living past your sell by date!!

If you don't mind my asking, how would scientists know that? If you had cancer, for instance, I could see them telling you that you had __ months to live, but this seems far-fetched.

Would it really be miserable to get around to doing all the things that you have always wanted to do but never had done because you thought you had so much more time to live? While this does seem a bit on the absolutely impossible side, I don't necessarily think that it would have entirely miserable side effects.

"...scientists can now determine exactly when you are going to die! "
Do you have any sources on that? - like an article or something...
I think it'd be kind of interesting to read about.

You should pay attention in science class. It will be useful someday. All the things I thought I'd never use in high school have turned out to be incredibly handy in real life! And I wish I had retained more!

I just nannied you. Sorry. Habit.

As a science major, studying biology constantly, I find your claim remarkably hard to believe. There are sooo many factors that go into the health of the human body. What you eat, where you live, how much exercise you do... you can reverse diseases like diabetes by just living the right lifestyle. Plus, there's always the chance of you getting terribly sick and dying from that disease, or dying in some accident...

What I can possibly see is scientists looking at all your risk factors, seeing your telomere length, and predicting when you might possibly die, but I can't imagine them ever being accurate for the reasons above.

And what would it matter if you knew when you were going to die? You should be living each day to the fullest you can anyway...
