With President Bush's final months in the white house nearing the end, we are faced with the new repsonsibility of educating ourselves on the new candidates.
Few of us will be sad to see Bush leave and worried that a democrat will take his place.
While others, like myself, will be glad to see him go and hopeful for a better future president.
The biggest debate seems to be that of Clinton Vs. Obama.
I usually don't like to argue my polictics with other people, but I just can't help but think that neither of them really have a chance of winning the presidential election.
Sure, I would condsider myself an idealist, and I would like to think that America is free of racism and sexism, but lets face it,
America is not ready for a black president or for a women president.
and please do not take this the wrong way, I am by no means a racist or a sexist. I wish that American's could look past color, and race and prejudices. However, everyday I am apalled by how much racism still exists to this day.
In class the other week, we were learning that a black student and a white student could go to the same college, and get the same grades. However, the african american student is less likely than the white student to make more money that his or her parents. While most white students are gaurenteed to make more money than their parents did. This is pure racism in a country where everyone is supposed to be equal.
In deep parts of the south, there are still members of the KKK. How should this even be allowed here? Sure, people could argue that it is a freedom of speech sort of thing, but it is also an attack on human beings and a race.
And so I wonder, is America ready for a black president. Even so, a black president with a muslim name? Religion should not matter. But you know how people make generlizations about these sorts of things. I am half pakistani and people always ask me if my dad owns a convenient store or make other stereotypical statements about it.
And also, I wonder, how many men would hate to see a Women in the oval office as president? I feel that many people are still not ready for this kind of change in America.
I think about it, and I realize how much of the presidential elections in America are based on such superficial things.
race
sex
what he or she looks like
their religion
their family
their appearance
whehter or not they did drugs or drank as a teenager
their pets
why do voters know more about these things about the candidates than they do about their views on important issues and the war?
why should we care abotut someone's appearance more than we care about what they are going to do with social security or the war in Iraq?
americans needs to stop focusing on superficial issues and get their priorities straight.
When is the day going to come when people can stop caring race and sex and physical appearnace?

One of the main issues is that the American culture tends to focus on physical appearance. Think of the products you see advertised. Approximately 50% of those are linked to improving ones physical appearance. Until Americans stop being visual beings and start being logical ones, they will largely vote based on what they see ( a black man, a woman, an older man, etc.) and the stereotypes associated with those sights.
