Easter....the bunny or the religion

Tagged:  •

Another holiday turned into a commercial venture for the enjoyment of the masses....is this progress? As Americans we wonder why other countries see us as selfish and frivolous. We spend time preaching religious freedom then we don't respect those rights at all. As a country we take holidays off which are religion based. We commercialize holidays which have huge ideals behind them in their true communities. When will we stop the madness?

I do not attend church. I consider myself a Christian but I am lapsed at best. Yet, every year I fall into the buying of the toys for family members and chocolate and dying eggs, mostly because I am bombarded by it. This year I actually attended a service and realized how idiotic I have been being for the past five or so years. Participating in the commercial rituals is not the same as reflecting on what I believe to be true. And the Easter bunny and the eggs belittle what I believe. I am all for kids having fun, but when I see Jewish people humoring their children with Easter Egg bushes, I am not offended but saddened. We have walked into this trap of doing whatever is easy and whatever will make kids happy we forget to teach them what is important.

I would be all for Jewish people having a lesson for their kids of what Easter is about to the Christian people. Comparing and contrasting it with what Passover means to them. And I believe Christians should do the same. I use these two religious examples as they are the ones with which I am most familiar, but other religions should stand up for their traditions as well.

Our "accepting" of everything has only made us look weak, uncommitted, and unable to make up our minds. Let's all go back to learning about other cultures, accepting those cultures, and truly respecting what they stand for.

You are right it is truly ridiculous what modern-day society has done to religious holidays. I myself am not religious but I think it is totally uncalled for, it belittles the beliefs that others put their faith in. For example, this past Friday was Good Friday and my school allowed people to choose if they were going to attend or not. Of course not many people showed up, and yes some people were really gone for religious reasons, but when the Muslim students are missing and claiming it as a religious holiday something is wrong.

Well, I'll tell you what...bunnies, eggs, elves, flying reigndeer, and santa... :idk:
