Two words. Michael Kors.
Everything that is wrong with American fashion. Even though we are the number one country in the world our fashion industry is pathetic. L.A. does not even count because it is too commercialized and offers no real inspiration or dedication to the craft. However, New York Fashion Week is the little saving grace of the States. It always draws in the crowds.
While Japan and China's fashion scenes, heck even Singapore's and Thailand's, growing and offering truly original pieces of clothing the American designers keep offering the same silhouettes with boring fabric choices. You watch the shows with a slight feeling of deja vu because the pieces are so uninspiring.
Paris. Pear-ee.
The epitome of everythign that the States needs to be. With the true couturiers and the joie de vivre of their clothing you watch the shows with wide eyes. You try to take it all it all in but simply cannot grasp the concept of innovative, well designed, original clothes which are perfectly assembled.
Even our Vogue magazine falls short behind French Vogue. While their editorials feature never-before-done spreads with genuine models the American version increasingly becomes obsessed with celebrities. They have no modelling experience and do not evoke the same emotion through their photographs. Models know how to the work the clothing. They know their angles. They know how to produce amazing photographs. Celebrities create sub-par photographs.
America, why are we falling behind in everything? Can we have a fashion race like we had an arms race. Please, create an all out battle and gain us some respect.
However, I DO have to give kudos to Project Runway which (ALTHOUGH MICHAEL KORS AND NINA GARCIA ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE AMERICAN FASHION SCENE) has produced SOME truly original designers such as Christian. Although he is young he has the potential to become America's only true couturier, however, he would never be granted that title. In addition, season one winner, Jay and season three (?) runner up Santino (although some of his designs were hideous), have created their own high-class commercial pieces which is a step in the right direction.
Degradation of Inspiring Fashion
