What? Prostitution?

Well, just this week duing one of my classes we somehow got on the subject of legal prostitution. It is illegal in all but one of our fifty states. Any guesses on what state allows it... or more importantly, what city is in that state that allows it?

Well if you guessed Nevada, then Las Vegas, you would be correct. At the time of learning this, I was quite appalled by this idea, not to mention the fact that it was legal in the city dubbed "Sin City". Yeah, what I found even more shocking is that there was a documentary or some kind of tv show made about the topic. In it apparently one lady said she made over 300,000 dollars in one year. Now is that being taxed? I don't know for sure but it wouldn't really surprise me...

I wonder why it is that only one state has not seen the need to ban this practice I would hardly consider an occupation. I would probably say it is degrading, no matter how much money you can make off of it. How sick and twisted could you get?

So now. What do you think of this legalized prostitution? Is it right? More importantly, is it ethical? Let me know what your opinion is.

If a woman wants to be a prostitute, and moves into Nevada to do it, then i will say she is following the law. I do not agree with the practices, and i would not want my daughter to be a prostitute. But, it is up to the women whether they participate.

I'm sure that they dont consider it glamourous...their just making a living.

"Well if you guessed Nevada, then Las Vegas, you would be correct."

Prostitution is actually illegal IN Las Vegas, but is legal just outside the county.

I absolutely think prostitution should be legal. If it were, it could be regulated and be much safer. Besides which, it is a victimless crime. The prostitutes choose the job and the johns choose to get a prostitute. I really don't think it is the government's place. No one is getting hurt.

Less Disease no victims
As degrading as the writer find it, yes its not a field you'd go into. But for the girls that enjoy sex, aren't shy, and would love to get paided to do it safely, more power to um. It like soo many other things has been around since the beginning of time, and in a country that capitalizes on all it can I'm surprised more things such as this that the Right frowns upon(and enjoys at time) haven't been regulated, like drugs for example. There should be some small shanty town with a barb wire fence and police at every exit where a person can go and act freely as long as its not transported outside. There is a lot of money to be made in the billion dollar(sorry, you who think it's some underground happening) drug industry is taxed, well to put it simply, there goes your taxes.... Victimless crimes are not crimes in a rational place, a country that trys to say its free and pro-choice doesn't exactly let you make choices on what you feel like doing with your self less and less, because a religioust right outnumbers us, the cult with the voice doesn't exactly control Las vegas does it.. thats why its sin city, cause its free thinking. I believe on a ballad it should ask on a scale from 1-10 how much you believe in the supernatural, anything above 2 and they should toss your vote. We don't need a whole bunch of wizard worshipers holding down the rest of us and spitting in our eye.

The only legal prostitution in Nevada comes from heavily regulated brothels. Rhode Island also allows selling sex for money, but the state does not allow brothels. Prostitution is also a regulated service, that is taxed, in parts of Europe.

I think Inara said it best:
"One of the virtues of not being puritanical about sex is not feeling embarrassed afterwards."

This country, in general, has very puritanical views on sex and the human body. Not everyone feels this way. If someone has no moral dilemmas about using their talents for money, and is doing so safely, I don't see a problem with them providing a service for people. Legally or not, prostitution exists. I think it's better that it exists somewhere with mandatory STD tests each week.

I'm a Firefly nerd.

It's sad. I have the hardcover compilation of comic books and everything. I even found a book written based off the movie Serenity.

In Germany I read once that If a woman is on unemployment, she can be cut off of benefits if she refuses to accept employment offers from a legal brothel.

Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world, and I don't see it going away anytime soon, especially not in the US.

Prostitution is absolutely everywhere. It should be legalized everywhere. Not only are the prostitutes (there are male prostitutes too!) not paying taxes, but they could easily be spreading disease. If it isn't regulated by STD screens, like in Nevada's red light district, it is dangerous.
The neighborhood I recently moved out of had a lot of prostitutes walking the streets. Friends would joke about seeing the women in sweatpants, and say, "They don't even dress up anymore!" Well, less chance of getting caught. It is also a drug neighborhood. I can guarantee that a large majority of those women were working for drugs.
This country is so caught up in "image" that widespread legalization of prostitution or even medical marijuana that it won't happen any time soon. Apparently, the government hasn't realized that anyone can find numbers of people arrested for prostitution, soliciting prostitution, or possession of drugs.

Well I'm not knocking the legal prostitutes because people have to eat. Sure there are other ways, but one way or another they fell into this position.

Is it unethical? Yes, it is but so is killing. People are killed everyday.

I would like to see prostitution stop because it is highly demeaning and wreaks havoc on your psychological well being.

Prostitution, legal or not, will never stop. There is too much of a market for it. It is a business, like pornography, strip clubs, or medicine, religion, and food supply.
It may be unethical to you, but apparently not to the the buyers and sellers of sex, or to people who understand the difference between sex for the sake of having sex and sex for intimacy and emotional bonding. I see no problem with legalized prostitution as long as it's between two consenting adults. In red light districts, prostitution is SAFE. It needs to be safe everywhere.
What are people so afraid of? Isn't it better to know that prostitutes are clean and safe than to just hope they are? Oh, I almost forgot... This country was founded by a bunch of Puritans....

That’s kind of a "pilgrim" type misperception, a large part of the true (constitutional) founders(most the main minds) believed in "divine providence" or providence.. not as much of a scared traditional “God” as the others.
They believed more that there was a greater intelligence they must live up to, even in the dollar bill, and all the emblems its shown their faith had control.
Everything, the eagle, was part of their faith, how many leafs were on its twig, how many bolts were in its talons, how many stars were in the original emblems, ect.
They were very superstitious, about dates, numbers of letters, number of lines in drawings, sayings, everything to seek the approval of the God they believed.
Their God had nothing to do with the bible at all but a much more mathematical religion..
You’d have to do some research into it as its been awhile since I’ve read up on it, like the national seal “E pluribus Unum” was the original wording on the print, meaning “Out of many one” talking about the plans and hopes for unity.
“Annuit Coeptis” to be around the third eye on the pyramid on the dollar bills meaning “He approves (or has approved) [our] undertakings.” claiming their Gods approval.. Not their trust in him, their faith didn’t believe in trusting in Gods, they believed the God had a plan, and they would do their best to carry it out.
You may notice both the Latin words within quotes are both 13 letters, they were big into the meanings of numbers, certain sacred for blessings, others signs.. Ect..
And under the pyramid on the bill was to be “Novus Ordo Seclorum” meaning “New Order of the Ages” which was tied in which they belief they were sent to reign a new age upon men..
This third eye on the pyramid was meant to be the eye of their God watching over us which is a far different God from the more strict rulings of the bible and its interpretations of the divine. Theirs was more a belief such as mine in that we are all controlled by nature, and they set their hopes that their surroundings would provide them with prosperity. They believed more that nature and the universe had outcomes and that by using their mathematical rules they could better there chances in getting a better outcome. So when people walk around and go “this was founded on the christian faith”, I’m sorry but they’re dead fuggen wrong, and its founders would roll over hearing that. The primary minds behind its foundings, Washington Jefferson, Adams ect were part of this belief in being part of a greater nature, which has been lost to ignorant superstition now adays, and had they lived today they would be all for science, as that is what they were leaning towards even in a time where it was not as prevalent or even had the information and knowledge we do today.

I dont know what kind of guilty sexual events you take part in, but there is nothing havoc wreaking and psychologically wrong with what I partake in..
If anything it makes all the persure that precedes it fade away when it finally happens and you get to feel comfortable for a few moments in your life without needing another thing in the universe to please you at that moment. The incontentness that pushes us to accomplish and plants the need to be more lets down for a few moments.

Psychologically liberating if you ask me..
