Other info about these five cars can be found at: http://money.cnn.com/popups/2006/autos/fuel_efficient/frameset_cnn.exclude.htmlThe cars listed above are not the most fuel efficient cars overall, but get very good fuel mileage and are also otherwise outstanding automotive values. There's no point to buying a fuel-efficient car that doesn't pay off in other ways.

None of the top cars are hybrids. That's because, with their added cost, hybrids aren't really a good value from a purely economic standpoint. But we've provided a hybrid choice in some categories for those who are willing to pay more to burn less fuel.

One thing you'll notice is that Toyota is well represented on this list. That's because Toyota does two things particularly well. They build high-quality cars by every measure and cars that are very fuel-efficient. On a list like this, Toyota is bound to come out on top.

what were the specs of the cars you were looking at? I used to drive an rx-8 but switched to a family car... accord (4-banger) the gas is much better than what's posted.

You're totally ridiculous. You are the kind of person who gets a mercedes and drinks your high-price liquor and runs over a 3 year old hurricaine evacuee. A girl. Anyway back to the issues, get a bike. You can get 50,000 bikes for the price of that mercedes, 100,000 if you get them at Acadameny. Keep 1,000 bikes for yourself if you please and race in the Iditarod, but give the surplus a Roman Catholic-affiliated charity. The mormons have enough bikes.

wow...

I have a Toyota and I love it.

Can I just say I don't understand what is wrong with getting a mercedes if you can afford one.

I can see arguments for both sides.

For the mercedes - it's your money and we live in a free country

Anti the mercedes - as a luxury car is consumes more gas (read: oil) and we need to be reducing our oil consumption

But if I had the money - I would seriously consider buying a mercedes as well.

We just bought a Toyota Highlander, and I think it has the same mileage as a Camry because its built on a Camry body or something. Pretty neato.

It says hybrid's are not good because of their highercost. I do not know anybody who owns a mercedes? All of those cars are extremely expensive! If I'm making a down payment I would rather make one on a hybrid where I only have to put in ten dollars to fill the tank! And they are also much more handy.

Not all hybrids come automatically with a higher ticket price. The Honda Civic Hybrid is about the same price as the Camry and gets 38-42 mpg.

My boss has a hybrid - it's fantastic, and gets an average MPG of 47mpg.

He drove down to Florida to get it. I know, the irony is almost painful ;)

hybrids are already very well above normal cars gas milage, and there will be some with the next year or two already hitting 80 miles per gallon, and lets not forget that most hybrids are cheaper than the normal car of their type.

Pretty much any compact Toyota is going to get you good gas mileage, have a good resale value, and be at a good price.

Toyota Yaris's get great MPG (about 34 to 36, I think) and start at only $11,000. They come in a regular 4-door sedan or hatchback form.

Scions are pretty good too, but they're a product of Toyota, so it's expected, to some extent.

LOL I know this because I researched cars a couple months ago. I usually use ConsumerReports.com for most of my research.
