Life is like a box of chocolates.

As little kids, I'm sure most, if not all, of us were asked the troubling question of, "what do you want to be when you grow up?"  It was probably pretty easy to answer way back when.  Apparently I wanted to be a paleontologist at the ripe old age of five (and yes, I did actually say "paleontologist" back then; I was more or less fanatically obsessed with dinosaurs, which, now witnessing in one of my cousins, I realize must have been kind of creepy for adults).  Paleontology has now evolved into Anthropology with a minor in Archaeology and Biology.  But what do I really want to do with this career choice?  I guess I have seven more years left to find out--enough time to get me through my doctorate's dissertation.

However, the particular question did not become clearly as complex and heavy until recently, I'm sure.  I've heard of college graduates still not knowing what they want to do.  Of people in Grad school questioning their major.  Of adults having severe career crises.  Confusion, apparently, is to be expected.

But anyway, the real question of this blog is: what do you want to be when you "grow up"?  It is rather progressive, since it has to do with our generation's future, and I'm genuinely interested to hear what most of you have in mind.

The average college student changes their major 3-4 times while in college... I would definitely say confusion is to be expected. I don't know, I guess it's kind of like a way to try out different career options - take classes, learn more about it, and then decide if that's the right option for you.

As for what I want to be when I "grow up", I'm majoring in elementary education and want to teach 3rd grade. I'm also planning to minor in photography at some point, and use that as a sort of side job and a source of income during the summers. :)

I know I want to have a career in media. But though I may not change my major 3-4 times... media is very broad so I'm sure I'll change my dream career...8 million times.
What about you?

Hahaha good to know that I'm not the only one unsure of my future. I'm on my way to college next year. I think the most annoying thing is that people tell you in high school to choose classes that would align with your major... what if you don't know what you want to major in?? It's frustrating.

Anthropology... interesting. I actually knew someone who majored in anthropology and went on to medical school. It's definitely an interesting concept - to learn about human development in terms of origin, physical, social, and cultural behaviors... and then apply that to the medical field.

I hope to apply it in a more archaeological or zoological sort of field. :D In fact, I've already begun my archaeological career; I'm going to Turkey for a month in May to excavate at the Goksu Valley.

This is funny because i used to want to become a lawyer, then a fireman, then it is finally down to a Psychologist. A Forensic Psychologist at that! I actually came into college knowing this unlike many students. In High School is where I did my experimenting and debating. ~<3~Love and be loved!~<3~

A neuroscientist! If not, then a welder. seriously.

Welders get cool masks. My dad wanted to be one of those underwater welder type people until he majored in electical science.

And from what I understand, no one wants to weld much these days. :(

Oh, I don't know. I think I want to join the Three Ring Circus, but I don't even know how to juggle. Darn.

Hey, there's good money to be had in the circus, if you're actually a star act. I'm sure if you can't juggle you can at least shovel animal poo.

Maybe. I've taken many of those IQ/personalities test and I've proved to be capable of being a butcher, a barber, a lifter, and such. Shoveling animal poo may not be too different from any of those.

I tend to belive we are just as instinctual, but with higher conciousness.

Off topic much? :)

i think it is neat that you wanted to be that! You sound really ambitious--even from a young age...

good luck with ur studies!

I am going to eliminate statism, collectivism, altruism, mysticism, anti-capitalism, nihilism, post-modernism, and irony. This will probably begin with public education, and I will probably be a writer, lecturer, advocate, columnist, perhaps principal, or political leader, probably not a teacher. I think the question 'what do you want to be' is misdirected; perhaps it should be, 'what do you want to be the point of your life' or 'what do you want to see?' ah, but then I haven't answered these.

I wanna be a youth leader for kids in middle school...and teach them to feel good about themselves...and how to make other people feel good about themselves as well.

I want to be a Computer Scientist. I vistit Third world countries on mission trips. And i was hoping to upgrade a few countries. Create technology which can be benificial to them. Education is needed in most so I think I will volunteer to help educate in countries most needed. When I retire I want to teach what I have learned through experiance. I am already two years into school and wouldnt mind going another eight or so to get a PHD. I want to make a impact on history. Not only learn from others' discovery, but make a few of my own. Man I have allot to work on. And Im building myself everyday. My hopes in life is to give my life to help others.

I'm planning on double majoring in Psychology and Philosophy, probably minor in PoliSci and possibly Classical Studies. Regardless of how these shift over time (I am going to college next year.), I'm fairly sure I'll end up being a professor. Of course, judging by how my academic foci over the past four years alone have changed, I could be proven wrong.

In addition to being a professor, I'd like to be an author of a few works at least, and I wouldn't mind being a columnist or a contributing author to a newspaper or two.

I keep changing my mind. At first, I wanted to be a photographer, then an artist, then a psychologist (that was the field I was most excited in), and now it's English. But I still don't know what to do with English, with most people assuming that I'll just teach, but I am not really looking forward to that~ Oh, btw, I like how you used that phrase, "Life is like a box of chocolates", by Forest Gump.

You'll probably keep changing your mind for a while now, too. :( Happens all the time. You know you're done when something just feels RIGHT about the idea, though.

Forrest Gump is the man with the plan. I love that movie. :)

Well when I was five, unlike every other kid who wanted to be a fireman or a cop, I wanted to be an astronaut. Then that moved to a doctor... the into something with medicine and now it's aeronautical engineering. Yes, it does seem like I have moved my mind around in a circle but I think Im sticking with it this time. I still have 3 more years to figure it out... seeing as how Im a sophmore in college!!!
