So it seems that gas prices are effecting everybody these days, and everyone has their own quick fix solution. i think we all heard about the only buying gas on a certain day of the week and just laughed. The most recent and widely spread one that I have come across is this idea about boycotting exxon/mobil and going to other places such as shell or valero. What I think is particularly interesting is that in this e-mail I received it says that this idea was suggested by an economist. Well if this is true than he should consider another profession, because obviously he did not think this idea all the way through. Do you really think you can get the whole nation to boycott a gas company? If you did make a dent in their profits then exxon/mobil would have to reduce their prices. I know what your thinking... isn't that what we want? No! Other gas companies would follow suit to compete. History has shown that when prices are set below the equilibrium price that it results in a shortage and long lines at the gas pumps. Another option exxon/mobil has is to just sell their gas to China. Either way this idea just doesn't work. I like everyone's enthusiasm, but you need to come up with something else!

The idea has the possibilty to work, but you're right, it never will. It's impossible to have so many people cooperate with one idea. But if you think about it... if we were to stop using some of the richest gas companies, they would have to lower their prices, thus forcing the remaining companies to do so because of competition. But like you said, it will never happen.
This so-called economist also did not take into account that most gas stations are independently owned. This tactic would only hurt the small business people who own those particular stations.

boycotting gas is kinda hard. people work, public transportation doesnt always go where you want it to go, and for some areas walking is out of the question. (especially where i live, 125 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, not fun to walk in)
but protesting to force the government to help fund alternative sources of fuel would probably be the best bet. i mean Bush is from texas, and is big into oil and has allowed oil and gas companies to buy out alternative fuel research companies. so that's not good.
So last week did anyone catch it? when President Bush was made aware that gasoline per gallon could reach 4.00 dollars. A look of astonishment came across his face. What a schmuck. As his pockets fatten he laughs unaware of the affect in the country he "represents"
