President Bush makes a come back today further screwing up and destroying the world. I didn’t think he could possibly screw up anything else more than he already has but boy was I wrong. We all know that polar bears have been declared an endangered species. Endangered species become protected so they can repopulate and hopefully get off of the endangered species list. The Bush administration is screwing this up and potentially driving polar bears to extinction. The reason? Oil.
Not even a month after polar bears were placed on the endangered species list because of global warming, Bush and his crew were standing by with drills ready to go oil hunting. Well of course it didn’t exactly work that way, but it might as well. Bush is allowing oil companies to aggravate the polar bears and maybe even harm them because of his greedy and careless need to find oil and natural gas.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25164928/
The fish and wildlife has stated that the oil companies haven’t been a threat so far in the last 15 years, so they believe their impact will not cause much change to the polar bear’s population. Last year the Marine Mammal oversight commission could not display enough evidence to conclude that the oil companies would cause an impact/not cause an impact on the polar bears themselves.
Although I guess this is good news for us it is bad news for polar bears. The good news is there has only been two polar bear deaths since 1993 in Alaska in the pursuit of oil. On a bad note the bush administration plans to use 29.7 million acres which would also include: five drill ships, one or more ice breakers, barge, and approximately 2 helicopter trips a day. Oil companies also plan on building hundreds of miles of road and trails made of ice along the “coastline”.
My main concern is the facts about polar bears. Polar bears like quiet, so they can raise their babies, and catch food. Also this would make sense because this is what surrounds polar bears; quiet. By drilling for oil we will be disturbing them, and they could starve to death, and maybe not even thrive properly. To be honest if someone was attacked I would probably laugh because we are in their territory. The other concern is if we are drilling the ice and using ice breakers, we could be destroying a lot of their habitat.
I believe the polar bears might be ok overall, but I often wonder if Bush is really trying to help his reputation he is not doing such a good job. We really need to get the greedy oil man out of the white house and find a better cheaper alternative for fuel. I would rather know that there are still animals in the wild rather than seeing just a picture in a book of the animals that once resided on the planet.

I agree that this decision is putting a lot of wildlife in danger, but I disagree with the whole global warming thing. I don't endorse it as being true or untrue, only inconclusive. As a scientist, I give both sides equal weight at this point.
I have a calendar that's a countdown until the day he's out of office. It is full of highly intelligent Bush quotes, such as "More and more of our imports come from overseas" and "Familes are where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream".

How many more days until our nations is Bush-free?
LOL. I just pictured an excited kid marking off every day until school is out for summer vacation and got a little chuckle. rofl rofl rofl
Thank you for the laugh!
The main point of the blog was to really express how ignorant George bush is. I am in the air about the global warming issue. This was just what the article stated. He wants to drill every last bit of oil out of the earth no matter what the cost instead of finding alternatives.
I am also counting the days. I know the election is is Nov but I am not sure exactly when he will be out of office.

Love comments? I do too!
It caught my eye immediately!
This reminds me of that movie, Grizzly Man. It is hubris to think we belong in their territory. Grizzly Man got eaten for it (oh...sorry...spoiler!).

I agree. You came up with an awesome title, Dani! It stood out among all of the other titles next to it, screaming "click me, click me."
Great work!
The main reason why his girlfriend and johnathon.. I believe that is what his name was... were eaten was because there was a bear who didn't like him very much. As much as it isn't funny it is because like you said we don't belong in their territory.
Bad grammar day sorry
Thanks Ivy and EW about the title

The polar bears are by no means endangered (even though some politicians think they should be)... so I do not really understand your blog. Unless it's to say, "Polar bears are cute and awesome!!!"
I'd rather "jeopardize" the lives of two polar bears in the next 15 years than continue living with ever-increasing gas prices.
I don't know. I would rather find other solutions that do not include oil. Sweden is doing so.
I recently read a book that sort of described the whole chain of life to where one species of animals is dependent on another and so on. I think the issue exceeds polar bears and is more like setting a precedence. If we ignore the wild life, possibly endangering not only polar bears, but the many other species of animals (including humans) in existence in search of oil just so we can see lower gas prices, we may screw ourselves out of a planet. It may sound a little far fetched, but when you really think about it our desperation for oil may cause us to overlook many other aspects of the world as we know it. How long do we want the planet earth to exist? How many generations do we want to have enjoying a beautiful earth? We really should be conscious of our actions and their possible impact on our environment and not simply our present needs. All of our actions have consequences and I believe we should truly understand all of them before decisions are made. If no oil is found there, when does the drilling stop? What other wildlife may possibly be destroyed on this quest for oil? What if no oil is ever found and all of those actions were in vain, would it still be worth it?
Or maybe I am over-thinking.
Polar bears are just the poster child.

You're not overthinking.
The answer to our energy problems is not emotional marketing with polar bear "poster children"... it's sustainable energy. If people put their money towards the technology development instead of towards lobbying Congress to save critters that aren't actually endangered... we might actually accomplish something someday soon. : p
Here is the best picture of our energy situation I have ever seen:
Energy Flow 2006
Every American should study that graphic because it is packed with information.
The USA consumes abou 100 Quadrillion BTUs (Quads) of energy annually. Of that, only about 6.8 Quads come from renewables sources and only about 8.2 Quads come from nukes. All of the rest comes from various fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal).
In the long-run, we probably cannot sustain our standard of living on fossil fuels. In the short and medium term we cannot sustain our standard of living WITHOUT fossil fuels.
We need to be making a forced march towards much greater usage of renewables and nuclear energy. AND we had better get about the business of finding and developing some more oil and natural gas to get us through the next several decades as we make the transition.
We need a comprehensive energy policy which goes after as much energy as possible from every source possible. Energy is synonymous with wealth and if we can't figure out how to provide a reasonably priced abundant supply, the kids coming out of college and everybody coming after them is going to face a grim future.
Fortunately we already have the technology to solve these problems. It is just a question of political resolve and enough time to make the transition.
Polar bears are not endangered and they were not added to the endangered species list. Polar bears were added to the threatened species list which is a different and not nearly so dire of a list.
The listing was primarily political rather than scientific. The Bush Administration pre-emptively listed polar bears as endangered so that they could not be used in a law suit to force nonsense climate change regulation through the courts. Canada, where 2/3rds of polar bears live has not listed polar bears and does not agree that they are either threatened or endangered.
At the time they were added to the list, the specific cause of the threat was identified. It was habitat loss due to arctic ice melting. It had nothing to do with oil exploration and there is no evidence that oil exploration poses a threat to the continued existence of polar bears. Two bears in 15 years is hardly a crisis.
If oil exploration is not a threat to polar bears, the fact that polar bears are threatened for ENTIRELY DIFFERENT REASONS is not a reasonable justification to curtail oil exploration.
It's 2008. If we haven't come up with a smarter way to drill oil by now, then we're just not trying I guess. I mean, let's at least consider strategic locations, so as to create less of an impact on the polar bear habitat. That's the least we could do, right?

Mind Control is Easier Than You Think
oil is not the solution so stop drilling. invest ur polar bear money into clean alternitives and lets bring down Big OIl and the fat cats of wall streets who control our economy
