We are humans. We have consciousness. We are, as a classmate of mine once said during a discussion of Grendel, “self-aware.”
This means that we know what we are doing, why we are doing it, when we are doing it, etc. etc. Well, most of the time. I’m not going to delve into altered states here.
Anyway, I was just letting my mind wander when I thought about control. Self-control, to be exact.
I was thinking about how I usually waste a lot of my time online. A friend of mine joked about that and got me to thinking. When I found out about the ProgressiveU blogging scholarship opportunity, I realized that it’s finally a small step toward NOT wasting my time. Granted, I’d rather NOT spend a lot of time on the internet; however, at least making GOOD USE of the time I spend online is a step toward bettering myself.
Anyway…
I was thinking about how we can waste and waste so easily. We can waste time. We can waste money. We can even waste our relationships and talents.
We don’t need to think when we waste. In fact, we usually act wastefully when we DON’T think.
In order to do the complete opposite, we need to be aware of what we are doing and the frequency/magnitude of it. We actually need to notice the extent and (possibly) the consequences of our actions.
This makes me think that as creatures with the gift (and curse because it means we actually SHOULD take responsibility) of consciousness, we should not be wasteful. We should take more control of our actions toward our planet (yes, whether or not Global Warming actually exists, I still think we need to do what we can to at least keep our planet sparkly and clean), our friendships, our responsibilities, our families, and, most importantly, ourselves.
Who’s with me?!
:)
