When Did We Stop Following the Golden Rule?

Tagged:

For many, many years growing up I had the Golden Rule instilled in me, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." My parents taught me from a young age to be be nice to my siblings because I would want them to be nice to me. I was also taught to share because I would want others to share with me. I guess the long and short of it was always treating other people in a manner that you, yourself would want to be treated.

In today's society we all seem to be so caught up in our lives that we forget the common courtesies that we were taught as children. Did you know that a simple "please," and "thank you" can work wonders on the human soul? Too often we are busy barking at one another because someone cut us off in traffic or someone else took the last box of twinkies off the grocery store shelf. And don't even get me started on the pure meanness that has sparked on other blog spaces where people get on and criticize one another just for the fun of doing it. Have our lives become so pathetic that we have to resort to bringing one another down to build ourselves up?

I know I'm teaching my daughter the Golden Rule and I'm also teaching her rules for surving in the 21st Century in spite of all the rudeness, meanness, and general discord that is going on around her. That's at least two people in the world that are working to revive the Golden Rule. Maybe you could do your part and we could start a movement.

It's a thought.......

"Revive" the golden rule? Darling, the only person who ever followed the golden rule was Jesus, and he got his ass nailed to a cross for all his trouble. It's a cruel world. Nice guys finish last. It's sad but true.

I pretty much follow the Golden Rule, or try hard to. I don't feel I'm finishing last. People tend to like nice people better. People with more friends and more support tend to succeed more. It's quite beneficial to be nice.
