After the devastating World War II was over in 1945. World leaders thought of constructing an organization. A national organization, which can put together all world nations around one table for the superior global good. Global good which implies trying to avoid any more destructive world wars and focus the world’s interest on development. So that organization was formed as soon as possible in the same year 1945.
Politically, mainly the Security Council resolutions, with the USA and Great Brittan on the table with their strong bargaining power. Enabling them to pass whatever resolution that serves their and their allies interests, plus protecting their precious national security. Then comes their infamous veto, which is a powerful tool to not let pass any resolution they don’t like how it sounds especially concerning Israel.
For example, we can see resolution 1559 concerning Lebanon in 17/5/2006 which represents severe violation of the concept of state sovereignty. It calls for withdrawal of foreign forces-Syrian forces- from Lebanon and disarmament of Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias. What amused me the most in that resolution was the first clause which states:
“1. Reaffirms its call for the strict respect of the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity, and political independence of Lebanon under the sole and exclusive authority of the Government of Lebanon throughout Lebanon”
Take a peak on Lebanon now respected people and laugh with tears.
What also attracted me during looking at some of the resolutions is that there were nearly more than 5 resolutions that call for withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian cities, mostly after the 2nd “intefada” which off-course weren’t implemented. Actually, any withdrawal they made was a one sided action due to their kind hearts or may be interests…
So political wise, the UN can just be considered as a tool in the hands of the western developed world, giving their actions the sparkling look of international legitimacy. Caring not of the superior global good, just caring for the good of western world.At that point they have just formed the western United Nations with nothing we can do about it.
On the other hand, the united nations really have excellent programs for human development of the eastern developing world. Including elimination of poverty, health programs, keeping human rights, charity programs…etc
The western Developing world didn’t choose being the major beneficial from the social side of the United Nations. But that is how it goes. Those countries have the major percentage of people under poverty line; those countries have the major percentage of infection with diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Those countries also have high infant mortality rate, low life expectancy, high rate of illiteracy and so on. So I think they’ve earned being the kings of the eastern United Nations, the social side of the United Nations. Not that they dominate its actions, but because they dominate its benefits.
Now if we add together the political western United Nations and the social eastern United Nations, we will never -by any simple or complicated mathematical means- reach the sum of the United Nations of the world that targets the overall and maximum welfare of the world. What we will get as a sum is a group of superior nations acting as kings all over the world while petting the other group with some assistance and aids that makes them feel better and shut up. That’s the unUnited Nations I mean. Don’t you think so???
