Drink more water?

Drink eight glasses of water a day!  Where did that come from?  I'm not sure myself, but I don't think it was a doctor.  Doctor's don't tell us not to drink eight glasses of water a day because it's not hurting us.  I have tried to drink that much water throughout my day and ended up running to the bathroom every thirty minutes.  I did a little research and found out we really do NOT need to drink those eight glasses of water a day.  There is water in just about everything we eat and drink.  That means if we drink eight glasses we are drinking to much.  The best way to keep from getting dehydrated is to drink when we get thirsty.  WOW!  Amazing!  It gets more difficult, as we get older, to tell whether we are thirsty or not, but believe it or not our bodies know when we should drink some water.  So, if you are drinking your eight glasses a day and running to the bathroom every twenty or thirty minutes, stop it!  We get more than enough.

Eight glasses a day isn't that much. Regular glasses packaged in most kichten starter sets are 12-16 oz glasses. In fact, eight glasses is really actually only 8 cups, or 64 oz. The glass that I use most of the day to drink my water from is more than 16 oz. The mid sized water bottles (the half liter ones) are more than 16 oz. So really, drink a glass when you wake up in the morning, drink a glass throughout the day while you're in class, and drink a glass while you eat dinner. That's 6 of your 8 glasses a day right there, so you just need to space out the other glass throughout the day.

And if you're drinking soda, you're actually dehydrating yourself, so you need to drink more than you think you do. Sodas are ok, as long as you don't have them every single day. Switch to water, or if you get sick of the taste of water, try something like crystal light, or another sugar free flavoring. If you live in a dry climate (like I do), you need to drink more water. If you live in a humid climate, you don't need to drink as much. PLUS, if you're trying to lose weight, drinking more water will curb your appetite, and you'll get healthier looking skin.

If you are very active, like I am, it's good to drink a lot of water. I drink about a gallon and a half a day. My body's used to it.

I drink way to much soda! I realize all the sugar and whatnot is not good for me, but does it really dehydrate you? Is there not enough water in it to offset how much you are losing? I read it somewhere, but don't know if it's true.

Caffeinated sodas prevent the uptake of water. Also, the REALLY high sugar content in regular sodas prevents uptake of water. Diet sodas are thus much better at regular sodas at hydrating you. Like I said, soda is ok, as long as you aren't drinking lots of it, and/or drinking it every day. A 12 oz. soda a day probably won't excessively dehydrate you, but it isn't very effective.

A good way to determine hydration is how dark your urine is. It should be a really pale yellow. Dark yellow urine means your body can't afford to excrete as much water, because it is using it. Obviously some water is still coming out, otherwise our urine wouldn't be liquid.

A gallon and a half a day! WOW! That seems like a lot. How do you get used to that much water?

Between the four people in my family we drink about 2 1/2 gallons of water a day. It seems like alot but if your excersizing and are used to it its just right.

I try to drink a lot of water because you really can not have to much. Also I read in a magazine you are supposed to drink half of your body weight in ounces in water each day. Another thing I learned, I am not sure if it is true or not, is that your body is already dehydrated by the time it senses you are thirsty and most of the time when you are hungry your body really needs water

The being hungy and feeling thirsty as a result of dehydration is true, but the idea that you can't have too much water is not. Water can be toxic if you drink too much, however, the amount of water you must drink to experience this effect is huge.

There are so many points of view about how much water our body needs and what water actually does for the body. What are some of the benefits of drinking water? I hear that it is good for the skin. I hear that it cleans out your system. What does it really do? Is it a magical cure-all as some websites claim it is?

I may not be a magical cure all, but it is necessary for survival. Our body is made up of 70% water. We need to keep this percentage up, otherwise our bodies will wilt. It does have very good benefits, though. It keeps the skin 'moist', so you are less likely to have dry skin. It helps keep your membranes moist, which keeps them active. It makes up part of your blood and your cells. The body does make some water when breaks down glucose (about 6 molecules for every molecule of glucose). Water is used to give us energy. It is split in our mitochondria, and the protons are pumped out and allowed to fall back through the gradient, which produces ATP. Too much water can be dangerous, and you'll usually feel sick and bloated if you drink too much water, but most people won't reach this point by only drinking the recommended number of glasses per day.

NIGHTMARE OF YOU's picture

I don't think there is such a thing as drinking too much water. Water is good for your skin and cleans out your system. So drink up!

You have to allow you body time to get used to drinking so much water.

But really going to the bathroom so much is helping you to purify.

I had to drink more than 8 glasses because I was feeling sick and my doctor told me to. It's not bad at all, especially if you are active. It flushes out your kidneys and your intestines. It's good to drink water. What I do is drink a lot on weekends when I am not at school becaue I have easier access to a bathroom. At school, I limit and space out my drinking.

now i have to pee.
