Here's a thought: more people vote for the next American Idol than for President. Does anyone out there think that should be happening? And how can we fix this problem?
I had an idea today, along the lines of: why don't we vote for President the same way? Instead of girls versus guys, it's Republicans versus Democrats. Tuesday night, Republicans. Wednesday night, Democrats. Thursday night, results show. We take out the bottom one or two of each party (depending on how many participants there are) until there are...four left of each. Or three left. Or two or five or however many they decide. Then the bottom one of each. Eventually we're down to one of each. They choose running mates and get one last night to win us over. Then we vote, and the winners are announced.
The voting numbers might be different. Less people would be so enamored, because it's political. Some people would vote more than once, which happens on American Idol anyway. But more people would vote than do now. Many people decide not to vote because they don't have time, or it's cold outside, or they feel their vote doesn't matter because they have seen how other states voted because California is the last to start voting and the last to finish.
Those problems are fixed! No one has to go out. It only takes a few minutes to vote, depending how busy the line is. And the entire country votes at the SAME TIME. The show could be on every channel, or at least commercials for it, so everyone would know. It would have record voter turnout, just by voting from home.
Of course there are flaws, as every great idea has. People could vote all night long. Some people wouldn't vote. But we wouldn't know how badly flawed it really would be without trying it first.~

I sincerely hope you are joking, because if not, I have to respectfully say that this may be the stupidest political idea I have ever heard. For starters, you’re wrong. More people vote for President than for American Idol, yet, as you mentioned, people can vote multiple times for American Idol, allowing more votes to be cast for American Idol. As far as voting first for Republicans and Democrats, we have that—it’s called the Primaries. To get to the point, having a call-in election for the President of the United States completely trivializes our country’s political system. Not to mention, elections are carefully set up so that only registered voters may vote, and each only once. With this system of yours, people who are not even citizens would be able to vote for a solid 24 hours, which is a far cry from giving each American citizen an equal voice.

sounds like a perfect idea, why aren't you president? :X

I'm pretty sure this entry was meant as societal satire. It's pretty darn sad that more people vote for their next American Idol, instead of the next leader of the country. Just. Sad.
You have to keep in mind though that you don't need to be 18 or a citizen or registered to vote for American Idol and that in real elections you can only vote once.
I do think it is incredibly sad though how many people fail to vote.
That is an interesting thought. Unfortunately, our country isn't usually up to trying new things like that. Plus I think that is a risky idea to test out just now with such an important election as this one.
