That's Art?

In my city on the last friday of every month we have an art show in an area called the delano district. We call this beloved art show, Final Friday.
Well, this past firday I went to a newly opened art studio and saw a piece that I wasn't too keen of. It was on white canvas, roughly 2' by 3' and had random paint strokes on it. All in all about 5 strokes were on the piece. There was just one color used and the artist had titled it "Park".
Excuse me? XD I was shocked that this was even accepted as a piece to be viewed. My boyfriend, a devout artist, tried to explain to me how that was art, but I just wasn't buying it. I didn't see how it expressed human emotion. I confronted the artist, slyly, about how he felt about this piece. He said that he went to the park, and that's what he created. I just nodded my head and pretended to be mystified by his piece.
In reality I was horrified. I have many friends who are artists and actually produce excellent pieces and continually get turned down to have it showcased at the art show. Then this guy paints 5 random strokes on canvas and gets recognized.

Would someone explain to me how a piece like that is art.
Please?

haha my town has the same thing but its called first frieday. im an artist and yea sometimes i look at someones piece and get really confused, i think some of it has to do with who you know and how far you are in the buisness....kinda shitty though. but at the same time i can look at some of the most well known artist and they bore me and find some random street art amazing. its perspective..

I don't understand how that's art... I'm in an art class right now and we're studying artists and some of their works look like a 5 year old did it. But somehow, by some miracle, they're famous. I guess it's all in the "eyes of the artist". I love art, but I hate the fact that your best piece could be turned down just because of someone not liking it. It's unfair and biased, but I guess that's life.

I totally know what youre talking about! There is a lil art shop in my small town, and yeah its more like a "discrimintation to art" shop!hahaha
But yeah the only way I might possibly admire art like that, is if my lil nephews or one of my mom's special needs students made somthing like that! Some of this famous are shit I just dont really get it.....i mean art like that doesnt even really get sold, and they expect a bar of gold for it!! But idk whatever i guess....i just know that to me, art takes talent and creativity, not just a brush and some paint

Art doesn't always have to be beautiful on the outside. Many good artists have confused paintings that they paint right from their hearts. These paintings are art because they come from the heart and they are beautiful on the inside. Sometimes even the simplist things are beautiful.
